No - if their speedo says they are driving 5 mph under the limit they are probably only a 2-3 mph under the limit because the speedo over reads - not under reads.

And whether you agree with them or not - and some I believe are cash cows and I do speed sometimes - speed limits are supposed to be maximum limits so driving 2 or 3 mph under is not dangerous. Frustrating for some, but not dangerous.

You've got that the wrong way round!

    Speedos over-read. Correct.

So if you are driving in a 30mph limit and you think you are driving at 25mph because that's what your speedo says, then you are driving at LESS than 25mph by 2-3mph... ie about 22mph.

So, driving un-necessarily at 8mph below a 30mph limit (ie 27% below the limit) could be dangerous, due to the congestion you will cause as a result.

    You're right - apologies.
No reliance should be placed on the above.

Only if you don't exceed the speed limit of course.

Typically its someone doing 37-40mph in a 60mph limit. I've had it happen a fair few times over the last couple of years. I indicate first, pull out, indicate in, leave plenty of room and they still do it

my milage doesnt matter i drive on the same roads with the same cameras as everyone else !i drive approx 5 mph UNDER the relevant speed ,if thats too slow for you TOUGH your impatients and lack of planning [not leaving enough time to get from a to b] is your down fall not mine .i can say hand on heart i NEVER speed ! can you say the same? how many points do you have ?

    YOUR A COMPLETE T!T.
im guessing you dont use a vehicle for work? if you did you should be sacked for being so slow.
people like you are more dangerous than speeders,as others have said, people who actually need to use the road are being put to an unecesary inconvenience having to sit behind you, while you toddle along at 22 MPH,i bet you are the type of driver that stops at every roundabout even if you can see the road is clear and nothing coming from the right for miles.
you may not have any points on your liscence because you dont do enough miles per year to come across a situation where you could get points.

as others have asked,i am also interested in how many miles you do in a year.

Also.. if all car speedometers read high, then by definition they are NOT "calibrated". So how can you be prosecuted for speeding when you have no accurate indicator to guide you.?

Because the law states they are not allowed to underread therefore if your speedo is showing at or under the limit then no matter how innacurate it is, you will not be exceeding the posted limit.

BTW, the legal limit of tolerance for a car speedo is +10%. Outside of that it's defective.

I am not disputing the speeding. If you ARE speeding then yes you should pay the fine.
All I am saying is IF car speedometers are not accurate, then how can anyone be LEGALY prosecuted for driving at the wrong speed?

How can you possibly KNOW how fast you are traveling if the measuring equipment is faulty by design.

Quite simply. By LAW, a speedo cannot UNDER READ so therefore you cannot be travelling at a speed HIGHER than it is indicating. It also can only overread up to 10%. The 10% tolerance was introduced when cable speedos were the norm. Modern electronic ones are far better but still allowed the same tolerance.

I repeat again that a speedo cannot under read so you should never be going any faster than the speed it is indicating but you may be travelling up to 10% slower. If it is defective and under reading, for example if you put larger diameter tyres on, then it is up to you to make sure it's corrected and you can be charged for having a speedo that under reads if you try and use the defence.that the speedo was showing 30 and you were caught doing over that.

Apparently not. I went through a speed camera on a DC in a NSL at 70MPH today and got the w*nker sign from a bloke I passed at the time who decided to brake to 60.

  • I cycled past a mobile speed van last week travelling at 35mph. I was going down a steep hill though...now then can someone tell me if they would catch me (a bike) going at that speed?

I don't think they could find out who i am :j
