Traffic Law doesn't apply to cyclists, ask David Cameron.;)

i remember seeing a programme on tv a few months back when police on moutain bikes (blue lights and sirens on them) were having a clampdown in the centre of london, watching for cyclists jumping red lights and cycling on pavements to avoid lights.
they were chasing them and handing out fines to them.

Sounds like fun if you're a really fit/fast cyclist.

Cyclist-bashing is a popular past time, but if you've never cycled around a town/city then you won't understand what it's like. On a bike, maintaining momentum is key to efficiency.

"Cyclists don't pay road tax" is a common statement, but every cyclist I've known also has a car.

Is the four years you refer to, the four years you have been in the Court system ?

Yes, it refers to the 3 cases I won in court, plus the 17 out of 21 wins on behalf of colleagues. (Details posted elsewhere on this site, and the pepipoo forums).
And why do the Police, the CPS, the Courts Clerks all agree to conspire and lie?

Because they are all part of the "safety camera partnership" which receives revenue from the fixed penalties and fines. And because they can.
It couldnt possibly be a simple case that they don't believe you  shock horror, but to say they all lie is a little silly, well a lot silly really,

Whether anyone believes anyone else is irrelevant in a court case, it's all about evidence, and what you can or can't prove. And in the vast majority of cases I've been involved with, the other side were unable or unwilling to produce that evidence. And just to be clear, I'm not saying they all lie all of the time, but a lot of them do a lot of the time.
so you really should get out more, but if you do, just keep an eye on your speed, there's a good chap :rotfl:

I've driven over 250,000 miles in the past 4 years, so that's a fair bit of getting out, wouldn't you say? And if it's all the same to you, I'd rather keep both eyes on the road, so that I can spot the middle lane hogs doing a self-righteous 69mph on the motorways, creating hazards everywhere they go.

I have been providing assistance, including Lay Representation at Court hearings (current score: won 57, lost 14), to defendants in parking cases for over 5 years. I have an LLB (Hons) degree, and have a Graduate Diploma in Civil Litigation from CILEx. However, any advice given on these forums by me is NOT formal legal advice, and I accept no liability for its accuracy.

Ironside QC, Since when do police officers, the CPS and Court clerks earn any money from the road safety partnerships ? How in your warm little world does this money and ill gotten gains get back to these perjurers and conspirators, what is the personal gain they recieve which will make them perjur themselves, is it to keep their jobs, or is it in their contracts that they must lie?

I think you are a little misguided or do you infer that they all lie some of the time or all of the time, as they all recieve a nice little brown envelope bung a bit like football managers (allegedly) Do they get this at the end of each day or is it by the end of each money for the bullying they have carried out to get more convictions and raise their commissions, do they get a bonus for tears ; )

I love your assertion that even though the magistrates believe you, they will still convict you, as believing you are telling the truth is irrelevant, where did you dig that one up from?

Jeez, they really do walk amongst us. I imagine with the venom you have, you must be teetering on a totting up ban ? in which case I really wouldnt get out more ? I think I will go to bed now to dream up tomorrows consppiracies and wonder where I am going to spend this months bung, ummm but think tonight I shall check my doors and leave the light on!

 Yes I read you post and yes you are simple enough for me to understand, just can't understand where the bullying comes from ? how does this occur, and is it common.

Having just caught up with this thread, I'm not surprised to learn that you are a policeman. It explains why you can't recognise the threats and bullying inherent the fixed penalty system. Due process must be such a hindrance to you in your work - I imagine it would be so much easier if the "the great unwashed and clueless" just bowed to your superiority.

Judging by you sanctimonious tone and frequent but humourless attempts to ridicule anyone who disagrees with you, you must really enjoy your role in life. Which is a good thing judging by the way you describe your meteoric career:
After 30 years in the job, 22 years on traffic including motorway and City and still serving...

Hardly a high flier are you?

I started to imagine you as a bit of Chief Wiggum character, but then I decided that, to be fair, you were probably more of a Lou or Eddie:

Far from it, I have 0 points on my licence, precisely because I've chosen to defend each and every attempt by "the system" to extort fines from me with their dodgy equipment and questionable procedures.

Some of the highlights of these adventures included: The CPS barrister who tried to assert that he wasn't obliged to disclose evidence to the defence in advance of the trial, so we had to get a Section 8 hearing in front of a District Judge to straighten that one out; then we had the Court Clerk who tried to get a defendant to change his plea to guilty even though she knew the prosecution had no evidence to offer; and best of all was the civilian camera operator who apparently was able to "form a prior opinion that the vehicle was speeding" from 600 metres away in 0.3 seconds! The Judge in that one suggested he should join the front line troops in Iraq, as with eyesight like that he'd be a top marksman in the SAS!

All the costs of running these SCPs are taken from penalties/fines, with the surplus going to the Government. I'm sure they don't get bungs in brown envelopes, but all the officials I've encountered seem to take a dim view of anything that detracts from their revenue-raising machine.

BTW, my nickname at my ex-employers wasn't Ironside, it was Perry Mason!

Do you know, virtually everybody I know thinks they are a superior or above average driver .. virtualy everybody thinks they can safely exceed speed limits ... I even remember a drunk claiming that he could handle his car after several pints (fortunately he lost his licence before he could do any damage to someone) ... occasionally they find out that such arrogance is not necessarily within their control .... very very few people go out to deliberately crash their car/bike.

Well said Ivan - I just wish I could put some of the braggarts that I know personally, to the test!

Who was it that said self-delusion was the easiest of all to perpetrate because at least you knew you were starting out with an idiot to delude?

I wrote quite a long post about this a while back.
Essentially, yes, more than 50% of people think that they are above average.
However, if you regularly observe vehicles in front making poor decisions and not anticipating, braking late for obvious hazards, veering from side to side, not bothering to indicate, overtaking at really stupid places and travelling at 40 everywhere etc, you tend to draw a conclusion that you might be more competant than a reasonable majority.

The line is where a traffic officer witnesses your actions and deems them to be unsafe, and then pulls you over to either bollock you or fine you.

I don't think I am an above average driver, I know I am. I know this because I've been driving a long time, I've taken an advanced driving course (and passed), done a skid-pan, and because I've been cycling for a great many years. I also have a clean licence, in fact it has always been clean. I maintain my own vehicle so I understand mechanical sympathy. I watch everybody around me and see the mistakes they make, driving errors which I avoid without even thinking about it. These are the same people who will write 'all of a sudden' on their insurance claim form.

Odd, it seems to be the only thing they can talk about. Perhaps they don't understand the things that are really important.

Oh! What it is to be perfect - ALL of the time! That kind of infallability must make you feel totally invincible!

I repeat "who was it that said that self delusion was the easiest kind - at least you knew you were trying to fool an idiot!"

What difference does it make? Is it ok for a kid to run in the road if there are no speeding cars?

Were you never a child then? Do you not know any? No matter HOW well you have taught them road safety - children often act on impulse, it is something we learn to control (or at least most of us do) as we grow older. They see something, or someone, and run before they have thought. They are so focussed on their ball getting away that they do not think! This is the nature of children - and that is something that drivers of any kind need to be very aware of.

They do not do it to upset you, nor to get themselves killed, nor to be a nuisance or a danger to others. They do it because impulse control takes a lot of learning (and some people may never learn it): since we all went through that stage of development ourselves - can you tell me if you could live with yourself if you killed one who had a momentary lapse of reason?
