You must apply for an ESTA online to enter the USA after 12 Jan 2009

FYI - US residents (citizens and non-citizens) used to be able to travel accross land boarders (Canada & Mexico) on state ID or driving license. Also to Caribbean cruises originating from US port.

This has now changed and you need a passport to travel outside the USA. This is maybe when the Canada land boarder rules changed also???

Well the US London Embassy is still saying that to enter the USA by land you do not need an ESTA, but need to fill in the I94W and pay $6.

They say that to enter by sea or air you need an ESTA.

Just go through their Visa Wiiver Wizard and those are the answers they give you.

Doing one may well do no harm - at least as long as they remain free.

If you are coming by land, you do not need to have ESTA authorization. If you are flying into the U.S. or arriving by sea, you do need to apply for ESTA.

No. NEXUS card for one is a valid travel document, and also saves a heck of a lot of time at peak periods. Enhanced driving licence is another etc etc

I know this is a pretty random question but I'm going to be taking my rbackpack on the plane with me, I will have 3 large cameras and a laptop + charger. Will this be OK? heading into New York, JFK from Manchester

It depends on your airline's hand baggage allowance policy. And on Manchester airport's security requirements. I think the latter is still one item only but ICBW

The items themselves are no problem - it the number/size/weight restrictions that may be in force.

I have just filled in the ESTA form for the first time. One question asked for the "Passport Issuing Country" however I wasn't sure which option to choose as there are several UK options...

UK - British Citizen (GBR)
UK - British DTC (GBD)
UK - BRITISH NATIONAL (O) GBN
UK - BRITISH OVERSEAS (GBO)
UK - BRITISH SUBJECT (GBS)
UK - PROTECTED PERSON (GBP)

My passport states the Authority is UKPA. Any idea what I should put in here?

I was born in England and have lived and worked in England all my life - I presume it is National or Citizen, but wasn't sure which.

I filled minei n fine you are a UK - British Citizen (GBR) select that.
