I wouldn't bother with lotions and potions as they never work in my experience.
I'm another fan of the NittyGritty comb - it gets out lice and also the eggs that normal nit combs miss.
Here's some info about it:

As said, you can get one on prescription.
Then simply wet their hair, put in loads of conditioner and methodically comb through. I do it ever day for three days and then again a couple of days after that and haven't found anything after the second day.
I don't know what you are like about TV but I have always sat mine down in front of the TV to do this, as it can be time consuming and it is easier if you ca keep them occupied. Do exactly the same with your DS and also you and your OH need to do each others hair. Also check anyone who is in close contact with them, as said.
As a routine, I go through dd's hair while once a week, while she is washing it, and I do a visual check a couple of times a week, and any time I notice her scratching.
I find it helps to tie her hair up while at school too.0 -
I am going throught he same thing for the last 6 months!! Nightmare. I tried every over the counterlotion and finally relaised that can't be good for my kids having all those chemicals on their hair every week. I have now started with tea tree conditiner and nitty gritty comb. You have to stivck at it though. Do it three times a week for two weeks then weekly after that for good measure.
I have managed to get them in my hair as well... I comb out my hair in the shower every morning when it happens and they never last longer than one week.
I really sympathise - i have been in tears over this too. it is so time consuming and the kids get so sick of it. my son has even made up a nit song to sing while having his hair done!0 -
Nits dont really mind if hair is clean or dirty - and having suffered for 2 terms before Christmas my heart goes out to you! Even I had the little blighters! I understand that a lot of chemists are taking part in a trial where upon you can get prescription lotions (might be worth trying for a stonking comb as well you never know) over the counter, you just need to give in your doctors details etc and away you go. Though to be honest I find combing every three days with a cheap conditioner more effective ( like lots of other mums on here) as the little offenders are become more and more immune to the other treatments! You are not alone and it is most annoying to "get rid" then be infested again - keep up with the combing it soon becomes part of your normal routine. I must say though I know I find myself automatically looking at peoples hair in queues now, now how bad is that!0

Hi yes the conditioner thing works best. LOADS and LOADS of it when they are in the bath with a nitty gritty comb. After doing this rinse out and go through the hair bit by bit with the comb. Do this every other day (sorry) this should do the trick i know what your going through have 4 kids and had an episode of this but the nitty gritty comb is worth every penny.Just a silly question but do you and your husband check your hair too?? oh btw the tea tree idea is a load of rubbish NOTHING repels them trust me ive tried everythingRoll on spring, I hate the cold weather:(

My hairdresser also told me that if you use leave-in conditioner, the type that comes in a spray, they can't get a hold on the hair, so that's another thing to try.I like cooking with wine......sometimes I even put it in the food!0

Well, if you are bad the so am, because my children ask me to check if they get a itchy head too!!
I check about twice a week as a rule, but for a few weeks after a nit break I can't stop checking them every time they come near!0 -
i swear by the nitty gritty comb! cleared my sons head of lice and eggs and he's been clear for a month now.
i had it on prescription from my gp. on the nitty gritty website it says to print off this page and give it to your gp to get it free! Then again DEFINATELY WOULDNT HAVE MINDED PAYING £10 cos it was worth it!0 -

I read online once that if you smoother the hair with oil it suffocates the lice, then wash it out, & swill with vinegar (loosens the egg "glue"), then use the nit comb. Its worked for my lads, & my sil with her kids (my sil can almost sit on her hair). Worth a try before you shave the poor nippers hair off.You cant take a step forward with both feet on the ground0
