My daughters class has had a problem with lice since the beginning of the school year.... some parents are are getting fed up and due to how things are the details of the child in question is being kept secret. I personally think if it's the same child continually bringing lice or nits into school they should perhaps be asked to stay away from school while mum and dad figure sort the problem out. My little one has said that the child in question goes around bragging to everyone they have lice..... it's no laughing matter and parents should take this seriously!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I work with kids and find the best way to keep off nits is tea tree shampoo and conditioner - go for one with lots of tea tree oil in it like origonal source or add afew drops of tea tree oil when rinsing hair. Platting hair (if it is long enough) is supposed to stop nits being able to climb up the hair. Hope this is useful.

Gosh sorry you both feel so stressed about this, bless you both!! It's so annoying and so much extra work for you both, your children are beautiful by the way.

Have a look here for prescription details:

There's even a letter you can print off for your GP, sorry if this has been posted but I haven't read through the whole thread. And don't worry my son and my nephew has had nits too, I'd be more surprised if a child went to school and didn't get them.

    Take care!!!

My daughters when about 9 & 6 got nits. I also got them. At the time my hair was about waist length. I found Full Stop didnt work. In fact I put one of the "dead" nits under the microscope and after an hour it came back to life.
Hedrin seemed to be more effective, however the best treatment is to wash the hair daily and leave the conditioner on. Then completely comb through with a nit comb. Two weeks of this should sort the problem. Then repeat weekly incase of re-infestation.

Hard work I know but it works.

yuk, I'm itching now reading this! The nit's loved me when I was younger, my mum was always having to comb my hair and put nit lotion on. She eventually found that combing them out was the only way as they get immune to lotions etc, she would comb every day for 3 days, then once every 3 days- to every week thereafter. Can't remember exactly but it's something to do with the lifecycle of the lice, if you are killing the live once every 3 days, they cannot breed and therefore you prevent them. I have also worked with children for 10 years and was super paranoid about getting them. I used to quite regularly nit comb my hair in the shower as a precaution, luckily I never found any! Unfortunately there will always be children who's parent's don't bother to do their hair, it's so sad for them, and selfish of the parents.

Condition their hair after washing and comb through with a nit-comb. You have to do this every day, the little blighter's can't hold on with the conditioner on the hair

  • Really no need for tears, it's a very common thing.

Have you been to the doctors yet as you can get a perscription for this? Suggest the whole family goes through the treatment.

The comb seems only to get rid of the nits and not the eggs.
  • I agree with everyone else, you don't need special treatments, especially not on the little one, just loads of conditioner, then sit them in front of a film they love and keep combing, repeat after every 2 days, until you've had 3 clear go's without finding any of the little blighters or their eggs. Your three are gorgeous, so congrats

We found the bug busting kit very effective, http://www.chc.org/
Use with cheap conditioner. You need to treat EVERY member of the family and the kit comes with a 2 week plan to tackle the head lice.
