My kids seemed to be permanently infested with nits for about 4 years when they were little and nothing killed the blighters off! I was leaving stuff on overnight that was supposed to kill them in 20 mins and they were still alive in the morning!

I read an article by Miriam Stoppard about using Quassia chips instead of anything chemical, and ordered some from ebay for pennies. I boiled them for about 20 mins, cooled the liquid and put it on the kids scalp - hey presto! Nits and lice all dead in no time....and they havent had lice since! The chips last ages too - i've treat my kids and a few of my friends kids with the bag i bought and there was over half left.

There is lots of info online about this if you know about it. Good luck!

I haven't read all this thread, but this is a method I read on a web site which worked for us.

Wash hair thoroughly with water as hot as you can stand. Rinse with a mixture of water and vinegar using a jug. This loosens the 'glue' which stick the nits to hair. I just used cheap brown vinegar. Be careful not to get it in your eyes. Put loads of conditioner on. Put hair up in a towel or shower cap and wait for a while - say 30 mins. Go through the hair carefully with a Nitty Gritty nit comb. Don't laugh, but I made my kids sit under a lamp so I could get a really good look. It really helped. When you are sure you have got them all, rinse again with hot water. Go through with comb again.

I always repeated this the next day to get any left over. We used tea tree shampoo but just cheapo conditioner as you need to use loads. HTH.
