I use nice n clear head lice treatment. Its all natural not a nasty chemical in sight and it also helps prevent head lice - they dont like the smell apparently!
Use it 4 times in 10 days with a nit come to get rid of them and then as a preventative twice a week. We have never had a reccurance and I have one with fine hair and one with thick hair.Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0 -
I think of myself as an expert on nits nowdays seeing as my very shorthaired son constanly got them from the boy he sat next to (my DD with her lovely long hair never got them..shows its who you know sometimes that causes recurrence).
I've used nit combs and battery operated combs.
The best is to put on loads of conditioner on wet hair and do the combing with wet hair and conditioner. Also go through their hair daily and pick them out by hand...you may look like a monkey.Only really works if you do it in really good bright natural light. I stick them on sellotape so they are gone for good & can't be picked up again and to know they are well and truly dead!
Electric comb is ok but is so fine that it does destroy the hair a bit if it is thick.
Tell the playgroup leader so that she can send the nit letter home and hopefully they will be gone. Do your hair too as you could rid his and have found that you have picked them up offf of him only to pass them back again
Nits ..i hate them!0 -
I had to do my daughters hair for longer than 2 weeks, it was awful. We combed and combed and still kept finding them, one nights combing would not get them all out. At one point I thought Hedrin worked, but not so sure now as they reappeared. In the end I had her hair cut a lot shorter, graduated at the back as she has very thick wavy hair and it made it a lot easier to comb through.
I found year 2 was the worst year for us with head lice, she is now in year 3.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
I have a Nity Gritty and its great on my eldest who has really thick hair but doesn't work on my youngest who has really fine hair. Removes the live nits from both but leaves the eggs on the youngest. Have tried it with conditioner, olive oil and baby lotion, her hairs just too fine. Its much better than the cheap combs because the points don't hurt when you're using them.
My DD haas very fine hair too, and I use the Nitty Gritty comb, there are no eggs in her hair. I do have to do her every week since she picks them up again from school. Some parents just don't care at all.0 -

I agree with all of this, but include Grannies etc. My Mum (God bless her) got them from my two more than once. Also Tea Tree Oil behind the ears scares them off. (If it's not that for nits, it's Olbas Oil for migraine - I smell wonderful!:rotfl:)DMP mutual support thread No: 433 - Mortgage - £54,556, Credit cards - £4012, Unsecured loan - £3,376, Other - £419

Id reccomend this http://www.chc.org/products_kit.cfm
Its a set of 4 combs and I found this to be the most effective way to get rid of nits. I used the combs once a week when washing Daughters hair. Its the only thing ive found which really does the job. I found on a couple of occasions the chemicals didnt work fully (maybe id missed a bit of the hair or something).
this is available free on prescription.0 -

I use avon detangling spray on both my girls hair every morning and I'm sure it's a deterrent as they're never had nits even when the little ones best friend had them and they had been playing together all weekend and shared a bed. We didn't know she had nits until after they'd shared the bed!! I'd advise it to anyone!!!Murphy's No More Pies Club Member No. 680

I had to do my dd's hair on thursday night it took just over 3 hours, her hair is long, thick and VERY curly.
I used olive oil and combed through it section by section, the nits/lice are unable to cling on and and it suffocates them. Then I put shampoo straight on without water and worked it in before rinsing off.
(from my sister in law whos a nurse) I then rinsed her hair through with Dettol water and will do every time I wash.
Then I plaited her hait tight to her head. She has 8 small french plaits.
The school checked her hair for me on tuesday and couldn't see anything, but she was scratching and on friday they said she didn't scratch at all, and I didn't tell them I had treated her untill after they said she had stopped.
EDIT:
Oh yeah a dab of aftershave on the temples each morning is also a deterrantGive a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person touse the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.:D0 -
Hi
I used tea tree conditioner when I caught them off my sons  . it did take weeks as I have very long hair though.... My hairdresser said (when I braved to tell her!) that the more lotions and potions you use on your hair the less likely you are to get them as they cant hold on to gel / hairspray etc.
It takes a lot of patience.
Must go .... just started itching ...!0
