what do the rest of you do when yours has nits though - do they have a day off school each time?
there's been one occasion where i didn't realise spud had nits until the chemist had closed for the evening and there wasn't time to walk to the chemist, get home, treat his hair etc. before school started. i called school to say he would be a couple of hours late (using the quick chemical treatment) and school told me to send him in anyway, and do the treatment that evening.
I remember the 1st time DS had nits. I kept him off, only to get a call from the school at lunch time to ask where he was, I explained he had nits so I was keeping him off, only to be told that was not the right thing to do and I was to bring him into school.
I now keep lotion in, everytime I finish a bottle I replace it ( to be honest he does get them regular so it pays to have a bottle in) and I check him at bath time every night that way if he has them I can de nit him straight away.
I have to say it is the most frustrating thing. It never even occured to me when he started school that he may catch them. With DD starting in Sept I'm dreading her getting them as yet she's not had them tho DS has the regular me and DS haven' caught them off him ( I did say yet!! hehe)0 -
Anyone else started scratching after reading this thread?
I only had nits once, touch wood, one of my friends at guides had them and after a camping trip, we were all infested!"Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, But beautiful old people are works of art."

I had a three year running battle with the little blighters due to other parents not checking. My breakthrough came as a surprise - Loreal kids lavender shampoo - she hasn't had them since!!!
I'm a little bit cautious though and still check every bathtime - for me and the kids. urgh i'm itching now - off to get the nit comb!!:D0 -
i checked us all last night :rotfl: we've been swimming more than usual over the christmas period and it's made my head itch but because we had a girl who always has nits coming to call for my children yesterday i thought we should check.
it's a shame really. the other day my husband had had a bath straight after swimming and because his hair is long he had it loose while it was drying. this girl was in our house and he flinched away from her when she sat by him because he didn't want her nits coming near his hair. i know other parents who won't let this girl into their house, and tell their kids not to play with her because she's always crawling with nits.
it must affect her friendships etc. having other kids and parents moving away from her because she's nitty.'bad mothers club' member 13

I still don't see why we cannot bring back the nit nurse(i have 2 kids and i would not mind). Surely if this person is police checked and supervised no-one would have a problem with it i think we have become over cautious.
Plus is it illegal to look in a childs hair !!! I don't see anything odd about a nurse (who we wouldn't think twice about letting examine our kids at docs) looking through thier hair. This may not erradicate lice but it would go a long way to reducing thier numbers.

myself and 2 of my teachers caught nits the week before Christmas off 1 of the children in our school. This is the second time this year we've had them and I've got really long thick hair (which I GHD every day and this hasn't got rid of them). The thing that upsets me is now I have some sort of allergic reaction on my scalp to the lotion which is making me scratch even more!
I totally agree that the nurses should come back to school and check all the children - as it is we can only send out general 'there's an outbreak of nits' letter to everyone and as previously mentioned the ones that actuallu check their child's hair are not the ones that should be! Much like parents night - the ones you want to see don;t show up.0 -
I feel your pain!!! I spent yesterday afternoon nit-picking my daughter and am away to rinse off the Hedrin shortly:mad:0

I remember many years ago my eldest daughter kept getting scabies. Although it was very contagous i treated her as soon as the doc told me what it was and it went away..... then it came back. It kept going away and then coming back. I was beside myself. I was treating her/us just as the doc had told me and per the instructions on the leaflet i was given with the medication to the letter and i was getting paranoid with each of us having different towels and things like that.
After a fair few months i went in to see the teacher of my daughters school. I had been to see the headteacher loads of times to explain my predicatment but she just looked down her nose at me. Anyway, the teacher explained that i should have gone in sooner as there was a problem with one of the girls in my daughters class (she wouldnt tell me who). Apparently the mother went in a few months previously and insisted that her daughter wore something to cover the whole of her body when she had PE as she had excema and the child was self concious of it she said. The one day the teacher saw this child get ready for PE. She was riddled with what turned out to be scabies. She had great big sores in the creases of her arms and legs which spread all up onto her torso. It appears that she had self diagnosed her with excema and didnt take her to the doctors when she really should have.
I only told my daughter as soon as i was told and of course she knew who it was, it was the poor daughter from the dirty stinking family up the road - she was the only one who was wearing a shellsuit instead of the usual PE kit.
I dont know what happened after that as i think it was being 'dealt' with but when i treated my daughter again it never came back.
When i think of the chemicals i subjected my child to over the months!!
As for dog poo. Well ive got 2 dogs and i always clean up after them if they happen to dump somewhere public but i get paranoid about the amount of dog mess that is not got up. I spend half of my dogs walk time pulling them away from dog mess in the street. It makes me heave! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. My son like Kay74 has started having a reaction to the lotion used on his head. It's very frustrating. I found my son had lice in his hair the Friday he finished school, luckly he must have just caught them as there were only a few nits/eggs, but I was obbsessed over xmans he already won't sit near me as I'm constantly going through his hair.
I've often wondered about Hedrin as mentioned in Amandada's post. The advert claims there is no need for labourious combing, might be a daft question, but why is this, does the lotion kill the eggs too???

This is probably the wrong place to post this but I'm gnashing my teeth here:mad: . My lovely boy (3) has been at nursery for one whole week and I find he's riddled with headice!! I'm loathed to get the chemicals out since he has sensitive skin - anyone know about the electric combs? Got one? Any good ? before I waste ££££ on one.
Any tips on future avoidance would be good. He's got thick curly hair which I don't want to chop off!!!0
