My lovely boy (3) has been at nursery for one whole week and I find he's riddled with headice!! I'm loathed to get the chemicals out since he has sensitive skin - anyone know about the electric combs? Got one? Any good ? before I waste ££££ on one.
Any tips on future avoidance would be good. He's got thick curly hair which I don't want to chop off!!!Winnings

I personally feel that none of these lotions actually work. You have to keep on top of just conditioning and combing and if you do this on a regular basis, you will keep them at bay. I know there are that few out there that don't bother and this is why they never seem to go away.
I condition and comb every two days without fail and althought they are rife round our way, this is the only solution that I find works. Would not waste any more money on whats available coz it don't work.I'm not a "SINGLE" mum, I'm a "DOUBLE" mum!:D0 -
Hi Mandles
Actually, I use Superdrug's inhalant oil. Yes, I'm sad enough to have stood and read the ingredients (misspent past as a Pharmacy Dispenser) exactly the same as Olbas Oil, but much cheaper. I put it on temples and back of neck etc. Helps by bringing heat to surface to dilate blood vessels.DMP mutual support thread No: 433 - Mortgage - £54,556, Credit cards - £4012, Unsecured loan - £3,376, Other - £419

my daughter had them and kept being reinfested by another child. although the treatment killed the live nits it does not kill eggs , this is what you see on the hair as white specs. i had to sit for hours after washing her hair and going over her head from ear to ear , pick them off and crush them. i did this at every oppertunity till they were gone, only thing that worked as she has hair too fine for a nit comb. worked a treat though and they havent come back.:rotfl:"that grady! won't sit next to a black child in church! but eats eggs, shoot right out a chickens !!!!!!" from fried green tomatoes:rotfl::smileyheaMSE is where my friends live :smileyhea0

I use avon detangling spray on both my girls hair every morning and I'm sure it's a deterrent as they're never had nits even when the little ones best friend had them and they had been playing together all weekend and shared a bed. We didn't know she had nits until after they'd shared the bed!! I'd advise it to anyone!!!
Same thing used on my girls :T so far so good!!
and a light mist of normal hairspray on my son!
:A:T Thanks to all lovely MSE'rs - you are great friends :T0 -

thank god my kids are older now and haven't had them for a few years. i second the nit comb and conditioner treatment, i used to squash them between my thumb nails to dead them lol. my mum used to swear by ever time you wash your hair give it a final rinse with diluted vinergar as its meant to destroy the glue on the nits so the eggs wash out before they can turn into lice'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0

Once you have got rid of the nits either by conditioner, electric comb etc use hairspray. It stops the nits from getting back in the hair when your kids or you are around other people that have them. I don't know why it works but the nits don't seem to like the stuff. I have babysat for years now and have never had nits back after using hairspray when I babysat for kids with nits.0

I had the problem at morning nursery, now we are in afternoon nursery none spotted yet, I do know that teachers can only advise parents, they can not exclude the child from school, even if they know the child is infected. Why oh why do some parents not do anything. I always check and take action either by wet combing with nitty gritty comb or by also using nitty gritty lotion. That depends on 4 year old daughter who hates the whole process. I have also resorted to wet combing once she is asleep just to be sure. I always check and treat other family members if necessary and inform all those who have been in contact, other mothers and teachers. As I am sure most do, sowhy do we still have to deal with this problem in the 20th century.
