Conditioner, leave it on at least ten minutes( an hour is better), and then rinse.Repeat at least a week later ( catch those newly hatched ). Combine with combing, using a close toothed comb.
Apparently the conditioner is thought to block the spiroles (breathing holes),or so a recent publication in a nursing journal said.:D
I tried this method with my long haired 14 yr old DS. It worked. He now conditions his hair every time he showers, to prevent any unwanted pets ( also tames his hair).:cool:0 -
Ahhhh nits, I too have posted about this problem on the DTW board, got loads of advice there. Currently nit free but my dd will continually get reinfected from school, this is the reality.
I use the nittygritty comb, slop loads of conditioner on her hair, wetcomb. I have made up a spray mix water and a few drop of lavender and tea tree oil as a spray preventative.
I insist that she ties her hair into a long ponytail and tie the bottom of it up also with a hairband.
I have to say the nittygritty is the first comb ever that has removed the eggs.
Personally I would steer clear of the expensive lotions, I have in the past used Derbac and many, many others. Aside from fretting about what these chemicals can do, ultimately they were all ineffective due to (in my case) my dd being constantly reinfected.
Some children are particularly susceptable to the nit problem.I also know how upsetting, annoying, and frustrating this situation is. I cannot tell you how many times my heart has sank when I have seen the little critters in her hair.

I had the same problem, Patchwork Cat, and I used the Hedrin correctly as well. I've also used Full Marks, Lyclear and another one that you leave on for 12 hours. I think the blighters are just resistant to everything except removal and flushing down the loo.
I find it's not the children that are the problem as I can comb their hair through with conditioner and remove the lice and eggs. It's me - I catch them from the children, then can't seem to comb them out of my own hair, which is why I resort to these preparations. I'm just waiting to receive a nitty gritty comb, so just hope it's half as good as the claims.
Does anyone just use the comb, or do you use the expensive liquids as well?Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)

I also find it amazing and a bit infuriating that there are loads and loads of cheap treatments for dogs to get rid of fleas ranging from an injection to spot treatments on the back of the neck and they all work. Yet theres absolutely nothing at all which will get rid of headlice on humans.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Hi Patchwork cat,
Just read your post. My d. has really long hair and was forever getting head lice. I spent pounds on various lotions and potions ( It was before i discovered this great site though!!). Then someone recommended a nitty gritty comb. They bought theirs over the internet and paid about £16 (free P&P) then i spotted one on Lloyds chemist for £10. Absolutely brilliant. I use any conditioner (just helps the comb slide through easier) and comb her hair with this comb. I section off and start at one side and work round to the other. That way i'm sure not to miss any spots such as nape of neck and behind the ears. Some people say tea tree conditioner is best (sometimes on offer in Avon book) but to be honest i find any sort works - as long as you continue to use the comb regularly, say a couple of times a week. Maybe every 3-4 days for the first two weeks to make sure you get all the eggs, which this comb removes as well as any empty white cases.
Good Luck and Happy Combing!!!

Discovered a critter walking down DD's forehead yesterday. Thought I would try Hedrin so did that last night, will wait and see but will also be combing up to next treatment.
DD is doused in repellent and hairspray daily and her hair is always up and she has them constantly.
Had parents evening last night and asked that suggestion for headscarves be put forward, surely this would stop a lot of the problems from head to head infestation?
What do you think? Won't eradicate it completely but could help.
Am sure it will be poo pooed on some Health & Safet PC grounds anyway.

Hi, feel free to shift or merge. I was wondering if anyone could post the letter for getting the Nitty Gritty Comb on prescription. i have tried to download it from there website but it keeps telling me that it cannot de/encrypt it. Was hoping to get it as i get free prescriptions at the moment and the doc keeps telling me that i can't get nit combs on prescription.A banker is someone who lends you an umbrella when the sun is shining, and who asks for it back when it start to rain.0

I do have a Nitty Gritty comb and I think they are brilliant as they get rid of the eggs as well as the lice. I've kept the cardboard it came on as it has a lifetime guarantee. Their address is Oakwood Remedies - London W14 8YG
Telephone: 020 7460 0166. E-mail: feedback@nittygritty.co.uk If you contacted them they might send you one in the post. Good Luck.

I just printed out the page on their website that says you can get it on prescription - and I think it also told the doc where to find it on their prescribed tariff thingy.
I got mine on prescription - I told him it would be far cheaper for the surgery to prescribe one of these for the family as opposed to numerous bottles of chemicals each time they caught them (admitedly only once in past 5 years and only one of us!) I also pointed out that the nits/lice seem to becoming immune to the stuff, wheras it's quite hard for them to dodge said comb.
I found ours fantastic (nitty gritty comb). Instead of using with nasty chemicals I used it with Avon's quick touch leave in conditioner (any leave in would probably do) to which I added a few drops of tea tree oil. I made sure the condidtioner mix was rubbed into the scalp daily, and did several thorough combings of the hair over the following days.
I'm so pleased I found a chemical free way to treat our hair as amongst our brood we have psoriasis, eczema and asthma (all extra reasons to avoid the chemical treatments)
Hope that helps,
Kaz x

It is absolutely brilliant. We've had ours for over a year and it still looks brand new, they don't bend or break like others. I check mine with it twice a week and every other day if I've found anything. They get all the eggs out too so they're not left with those unsightly little blobs in their hair, which so many kids at school seem to have
I couldn't give it higher praise - they provide a very simple system for getting rid of an outbreak and that's really all there is to it. Say goodbye to nit worries. (No I don't work for them. lol. But I do have 3 girls who used to often get nits)
I can't seem to copy and paste the form to post it here, maybe like Rachel021967 said, give them a ring. Or download 'Adobe Reader' which is what you need to view the document. http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.htmlI've been lucky, I'll be lucky again. ~ Bette Davis0
