Not sure if this happens with all counties, but when my daughter started school she was given a nit comb with instructions for weekly combing and should she catch nits then for daily combing, it's main recommendation was to use a couple of drops of tea tree oil on wet hair before drying and fingers crossed it seems to be working as although there are children with nits in her class she hasn't yet caught them. Anyone know if there is a petition started to reinstate the 'nit nurse'0

When my son had nits I used any old conditioner, put straight onto the hair without washing it and left him in a shower cap for a few hours before combing it out. The first time I combed I pulled out all sorts of crawlies, next next only a couple and the night after ... none
I think rather than drench your kids head in chemical solutions just make it fun with the shower cap ...
Also check regularly, as some parents can't be bothered checking their kids hair ... I work at a school and sometimes you see them falling out of the childrens hair ... they get the bog standard nit letter and they still have them., The head at my school got the parents in and told them not to bring the children back in until the head was clear ... sure enough, given the choice of cleaning the hair or having them running riot at home the hair was soon seen too.
(Anyone else scratching their head now, lol)0 -
We are going to have a nit night check at least once a week. Before it was every couple of weeks.
Bring back Nit nurse nitty Nora the good old days:rotfl:0 -
Hi, don't know if this happens in erevry county but in east yorkshire you don't need a prescription for certain minor ailments in children, headlice included. All you do i go to the chemist and fill out a form with the childs details and they give you the medicine/product free, such as nit stuff and coughs and cold stuff. My GP surgery has a list of the chemists that offer this and I think it i a government thing sso sshould really apply all over. Check with your GP's.
Hope this helps someone.:hello: Laugh and smile everyday, it keeps you healthy ! :wave:Thanks for everybodies help on here, what a great community !0 -

cornbuddy wrote:When my children used to come home with headlice I found the best treatment is to buy some tea tree conditioner and smother their heads with it. Then go through it with a nit comb and the nits will come out. You have to do it a few times, but it is better than some of the chemical products on the market at the moment, also a lot cheaper!
i totally agree cornbuddy i never use a chemical on my daughters hair, my boys have never had head lice but my daughter has a few times but touch wood she's never had them for at least a year and a half, plus i constantly keep her hair tied back0 -
The best investment I've ever bought is the NIT FREE comb. It has longer teeth than usual nit combs. It also has spirals running down the teeth this does help to pull some eggs off as well as the nits. I've found that washing hair applying conditioner then using the comb is best. As the nits have more trouble holding on to the hair with the conditioner on. Then wash out the conditioner & repeat daily or weekly as needed.
Usually it doesnt take long to rid totally.
I got my NIT FREE comb off e-bay for £8.99. It seems a lot but I guarantee it does work.
Hope this helps someone :>)0 -

There's always somebody in my daughters class with head lice...She has just finished reception year and we had a letter re head lice virtually every week!! I go through her hair every night and have managed to catch them before they have chance to lay eggs, (only happened once but that was enough for me!) I use tea tree conditioner when I wash her hair, which is normally every 3rd night and use pure tree tree diluted in a spray bottle and just spray her hair every morning as I'm putting it up.. After the 1st experience I never let her go with her hair down....So far it's worked a treat. I wish they'd bring back the nit nurse... all this political correctness is going too far, how can it be okay to let kids have to go through this constantly? To err is human, to forgive divine!!!:A0
