Yet another breakout with my 2 daughters has lead me on another trip to the pharmacy.

There is a new headlice treatment out called Hedrin. It works by shrinkwrapping the lice or suffocating them instead of killing them with insecticides. It can be used repeatedly every time you child gets lice. You have to apply it to dry hair, it has no smell at all and it feels like smothering cooking oil on their hair. It has to stay on for 8 hours or overnight. You wash it off with regular shampoo and then comb. Then you have to repeat the treatment again 7 days later. So far we are still waiting for the 8 hours to be up so I will let you know in the morning if there has been any success. It costs £11 per bottle and I've had to buy 2 today because my daughters have long hair. If you have short hair you could get away with half a bottle.

Theres a website on it here:

My BIL got some of this on prescription for my niece, she is a "carrier" (ie always has the little !!!!!!s no matter what he uses on her hair) and it's one of the few things that has ever worked for her. Not long till they are back though :(

Can you get it on prescription? It's costing me £44 to treat my 2 childrens hair because you have to do it twice and they need a bottle each!!

My BIL did, but I think it must just be a new thing because he has never been offered it in the past and his gp had to look through all the options on the computer to find something they haven't tried before. It might be worth phoning your surgery and asking them about it. I know my bil definitely didn't pay for it, he wouldn't have a clue about being able to buy nit stuff at the chemist, his mum, who helps look after my niece for him usually deals with that kind of thing but she's on holiday at the moment so he's had to do it.

One tip if you and your daughter struggle with wetcombing - either I get my daughter to sit on a stool and I sit on a chair, or she sits on a chair and I stand - much easier than bending.

I recommend this site http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/theliceprogram/theprogram.html to help understand the lifecycle of the lice, and why there are always a few more just when you think you have finished! I like the nitty gritty combs as well.

Wow thanks for nominating me  I can report that this stuff is great. It really works and it also conditions the hair so it ends up soft and silky and really easy to comb. It's got every last trace of lice out of my daughters hair which is no mean feat if you were to see my DD1's hair. Also one of the best things about it is it's not an insecticide (sp?) so the lice will never get immune to it. So you can use it each time they get the !!!!!!s it will work.

Our local cheap remedy is vinegar!!!

I think you put loads in the hair and leave it till the morning to wash out. I know it stinks - but APPARENTLY it's a valleys guarantee!!!
Am not witty enough to put something cool and informative here:o :o

You are all remembering to change your pillowcases and wash your pillows after an outbreak, I hope?
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.
