it all comes down to standards ! i certainly would be making a fuss if faced with the same situation but i guess some of the answers on this topic suggest some people are a lot less fuss about their hygene! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. i know, i was being a little pedantic after reading your post about anthrax
anyway, I think the op should maybe have a quiet word with the cafe manager and just bring to his/her attention that it's obvious some members of staff need reminding about hand hygiene, the refund I feel was suffice .Bring back mark and lard NOW! or else (please) clique member no. 10 :j

I'm much better at assessing actual risk and putting it into perspective!
Funnily enough, I haven't had food poisening from eating out.0 -
i have had food poisioning from a sainsburys cafe(won't go in to it)
But hygiene standards are paramount to my family as our youngest son was born without an immune system so the bit of dirt, grime whatever you may get in your food or from the tables or the person serving you your body maybe able to cope with but we don't now eat out anywhere when hes with us 99% of the time.
I do agree with the op on the fact of finding a hair makes her nauseas as it does me, but i would just put it down to a bad cafe and never go there again as even if you complain nothing will be done about it, so let it go and avoid in future.0 -
You mean you have never heard of anyone dying from food poisoning. Dirty fingernails, hair in food are examples of poor hygiene.
If you can see examples of this what can't you see.
This person obviously hasn't grasped basic food hygiene, how are they when handling raw and cooked meats.
As the OP said this food handler also worked on the till bacteria will travelMy opinions are purely my own act on them at your own risk :think:0 -
"and 7 out of 10 consumers who said they had suffered from food poisoning in the past year said their illness had been caused by eating out."

That is just what consumers believe, not a factual survey.
Most food poisoning occurs in the home or from social gatherings such as xmas parties, bbq's etc.
This is because most caterers have better knowledge of how to cook food than the average person. Food poisoning is most often caused by 2 things, 1) the core of an item of food not being at a high enough temperature for long enough, I recall it being something around over 70 degrees C for over 2 minutes. 2) cooked food being left unchilled for too long after it's been cooked. 4 hours is the maximum recommended. (anyone who actually does work in the catering industry will know these 2 things are by far the most important things)
Many people are unaware of things like this and most food poisoning occurs in the home/from social gatherings because of this.

"88% of cases classed as outbreaks (affecting more than one household) were linked to social gatherings"

How does the Agency recommend that people wash their hands?
To wash hands properly, we recommend these six steps:
1. Wet your hands thoroughly under warm running water and squirt liquid soap onto the palm of one hand.
2. Rub your hands together to make a lather.
3. Rub the palm of one hand along the back of the other and along the fingers. Then repeat with the other hand.
4. Rub in between each of your fingers on both hands and round your thumbs.
5. Rinse off the soap with clean water.
6. Dry hands thoroughly on a disposable towel.
Nothing about scrubbing fingernails!
I thought as much. Looks like they know the risk of that is minimal just as I do.
Andyrules, I have worked in retail locations in the past that have had some aspect of catering included. No one ever was ill! I had many standard EHO visits, all past with flying colours!0 -
I think what the op is concerned with (which some on here have either ignored or missed) is the fact that the girl's dirty nails signalled either a lack of interest or knowledge about food-handling. I'm not sure what minimum wage has to do with this.
As for complaining - someone on here stayed at a hotel last year which flouted fire regs, so she complained. I stayed there just after her and there were no problems. Logic suggests that her complaint was acted upon. She may even have saved a disaster.0 -
I am with the op here, if i found a hair, i would fell sick and the finger nails would make me scream! I think the op was right to post it here, she should compain to everyone she can, tesco, manger, food standereds agency! She is worryed that someone could get ill from the food or even worse die! And if she dosnt take the necessary action it could carry on!0

Thankyou to all those who realised that it is not just a complaint to try and get something for nothing out of Tesco.
Yes it all about customer service, and basic food hygiene!!.
Just to update, I rang the store today, and spoke with the store manager.
He was very apologetic, and agreed that it was totally unacceptable.
He has promised to investigate the matter, with the restauraunt (sub contractors), and will get back to me tomorrow.
Thanks for all the advice that has been given, much appreciated.0
