    Hi

I used to make a big batch of scones, pastry etc and freeze it raw and then when I knew the oven was going to on threw a few in. Also fairy cakes and muffins are quite handy to fill oven space because even if you don't need them now you can freeze them and get them out as you need them.

Another thought is maybe putting a casserole dish of veggie scraps in water in to make stock cos you can leave than in to use up the cooling down period.

    Have fun

That stockpot idea sounds like a really good one, cuddlymarm - hadn't thought of that!

How about making something forgiving like a bread pudding (doesn't need to rise, doesn't necessarily need a steady temperature) - and since you can heat it hot or cold, you can maybe cook it one day and eat it the next, if you had something else planned for the day.

If if lasts that long...... :)
Oh come on, don't be silly.

In the 70's when the children were small and I actually cooked I used to have a marge box in the fridge with 1lb marge and 1lb sugar creamed in the food mixer and mixed with 4 beaten eggs. When the oven was on, I would weigh out some of the mixture and add the equivalent amount of flour to make buns. When it came to the end of the box, I just added enough flour to get the right consistency for rock buns or raspberry buns. If we already had enough cake out (not very often) I would freeze the results.

I don't know how long the mixture would last as it never made it to the end of the week but no-one ever suffered from food poisoning!

I used to buy the 4lb boxes of Kraft marge and when we came to the end of it also cleaned it out by making rock cakes as above.

I still have loads of these boxes as they had a brilliant seal. They store all kinds of things.
  • I know this is a bit early! Mince pies can be made and frozen raw in their trays. When the oven is on just pop a tray in to bake........they are very forgiving as long as the oven is not terribly hot. If you are short of trays they can be removed from the tray and bagged up once frozen.

My problem with this is I never have enough baking trays and bun tins. I had a baking day the other day and had to plan things in a particular order to use the tins in the best way! Must invest in some more but always seems expensive.

I'd definatly go for the fairy cakes & bread pudding, I also roast veggies when I have a glut and stick them all in the freezer for later on

Edit: Just realised I'll have the oven for tea as I'm doing Pizza so I think I will throw in some fairy cakes too as we've run out and the kids love them! Thanks for this thread and making me think a little more!

Great idea for a thread. I often sprinkle nuts and seeds onto a baking tray and pop them in the oven to roast for 10 mins. The are lovely the next day as a snack.
