If you hunt out a copy of Jocasta Innes "pauper's Cookbook" she suggests "planned eating".
As a single person on the dole, I used this to minimise my fuel costs:
Liver casserole for that night and the next
Jacket potatoes - with the casserole, sliced as a medley with sausages, sliced in a poor man's spanish omelette
Sausages baked for above and for sausage sarnies, sausage pasta.
pastry case for tart/quiche or a Tarte Alsace to eat later in the week
Crumble for puddings
Scones for snacks
Occasionally flapjack.
today, i would definately add roast veggies. Could be a salad or whizzed for a tasty soup later in the weekIf you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Am planning a dish of roasted beetroot and another of red peppers with garlic (to be eaten with a couple of meals) at the bottom of the oven while tomorrow night's potato and cheese bake is on. I've been waiting for a week to do these veggiebox beetroot!

Hi Shirley
I think it's a really good habit to always think what you could be cooking !
There is an older thread - what can i cook in the oven whilst - so have a read and i will merge this later for you. How to organise everything in my life OS should also help. There is another thread - it won't come to me right now.! Anyone?
thanks

Well, it's all very vague but generally, I use two tea cups of basmati rice for four of us, stir in a teaspoon of veg stock powder or salt, maybe some turmeric for a colour change, and a drizzle of vegetable oil. I then add boiling water until it is 5 mm over the top of the rice. Bake in a fairly wide and shallow casserole dish with the lid on in a hot oven (ie one that already contains the rest of the meal) until done. It could take between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on exact quantities so I check after 10 and give it a stir.
Sorry not to be more exact but there is no recipe, I'm afraid.0 -
meringues would be one to think about as the oven cools - pavlova particularly as this starts off higher then goes lower and then stays in the turned off oven until cold.0

I sometimes have sausages for breakfast, along with another usual breakfast item.
I will cook all of the packet of sausages at the same time, then freeze individually and microwave as needed.
These only me who has this type of breakfast so these no point putting the oven on to cook on sausage, OH has toast or cerial.0 -
I always try and chuck a couple of jacket potatoes in when the oven is on, I love eating them cold with salad or baked beans (hot beans not cold ones!).
Love the idea of baking rice, will definately try that, hate using oven when it's not full. We do have a little top oven which I use if not much to cook but it takes longer to heat up than the big fan oven. There is no issue so small that it can't be blown out of proportion0 -
I am having potato wedges and bread and butter pudding later.
Any ideas of what else i can bung in the oven at the same time to maximise the oven being on.
I have a very hungry toddler and oh to feed so anything snacky would be great.
I have most basic foods in the cupboard i can use.
Thanks in advance.0 -

Savoury ones, sweet ones! Lots of sconesMy toddler loves then and I pop them on little trays that fit round things whenever the oven is on.
Toddler may also like a tray of Twinks?
