  • was just thinking the same thing as ive got to turn on our stupidly large oven for roasting a chicken.
i think im gonna make some cheese straws and some flapjack at the same time,as well as roasting some toms and courgettes to make pasta sauce out of for tea tomorrow, hope u get lots of suggestions, then maybe i can fill the whole thing up!
  • A cake; some biscuits; some beans, but they'll need pre-soaking.

More in this thread; I'll add this one later to keep ideas together.

  • I've read on here before about someone baking potatoes while they have the oven on anyway and then freezing them to use another time. Never tried it myself so not sure how well they freeze and defrost.

I agree with flapjack as it is quick to make, also banana bread where you bang in all the ingredients together, mix then pour into tin and bake for 55 mins-delicious spread with butter.
  • This is my new thing at the moment - trying to maximise use of the oven. On a Sunday while roast is in I also bake jacket potatoes - when they are done scoop the flesh out and mash with cheese and onion - then refill the shells. When chilled put in the fridge and it is a quick tea another night. I also put a veg curry in to give another easy tea and make a quiche for carry out lunches. It makes quite an intensive Sunday afternoon but makes life easier in the week

I used to work in a small cafe, they used to bake the potatoes and freeze them, I have to say they were the most disgusting looking things in the world, no wonder people never asked for them twice.

I'd stick to some of the other suggestions, cakes, scones, biscuits, flans, or stews. But that's just me and each to their own.;)

If you want to keep it simple, then why not cook 2-3x the amount of wedges - and freeze them. And make two b/b puddings and freeze the 2nd?

I agree with scones and flapjack. And I also bake blind pastry cases and jam tart cases when I have spare oven space, and freeze them. Always handy for a quiche or a fruit tart.
If I'm over the hill, where was the top?
