It was great, MC, well done to her, in more ways than one.

We knew she was an extremely bright girl, has had all the advantages of good schools and a happy family life, but it was just that simple act of picking up the phone and speaking to DH that made such a difference. Even so, she spoke to me and explained exactly what she's got and what she intends to do with it - no talk of 'you're not my granny' from her! Biological and medicinal chemistry at a Midlands university with the long-term aim of doing research and development into cures for nasty diseases. For which there is a huge need. DH's cousin was treated last year for acute myeloid leukaemia, was in remission, now isn't in remission, back into hospital.

That's really good news, MC. She has shown you that you are wanted and loved members of the family.

They are a really lovely family. Now it's the younger daughter's turn to wait for results next Thursday. DH's daughter has been such a rock when I needed it, when he was ill, at our wedding, at my daughter's funeral, always remembers birthdays and I can't help contrasting all that with my own biological family. Oddly enough they have still got a granny living - DH'S first ex-wife - but there's no contact between them. I've no idea why - don't intend to open that particular can of worms!!!

I'm pleased for you that your 'inherited' family are friendly towards you, but don't compare too much or the thought might cross people's minds that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree:)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Not sure what that's supposed to mean. Actually I had two daughters who were completely different. The younger one was very badly-treated by the elder one. As two offspring of the same parents they could hardly have been more different from each other.

My younger daughter died almost 10 years ago now. Had she lived, a lot of things would have been hugely different.

They're not 'inherited family'. They're family by marriage.

All this boiled down to was picking up the phone, or not.

So your step granddaughter has phoned you and your husband and told you the news but their own grandmother probably doesn't know? Or maybe she does know and is on a site moaning about how awful her daughter and granddaughter are, how they have no manners and don't tell her anything. And so it goes on. Aren't family relationships difficult.

I am not responsible for whatever happens with my step-GD's GM. DH was divorced from her long before I ever knew him. The main thing was, his GD phoned her Grandad and he was absolutely delighted. He felt very strongly that this was how important news should be communicated in a family and he was hurt on my behalf, which was why he jumped in with both feet.

Well done. Wish you well to drive it. Not long now until we go across the Channel for a 4-night stay in the Novotel near Amiens. What we originally planned for the week before Easter but DH's spinal problems put that on hold. We'd paid for it, and the ferry crossing, couldn't get the money back but we were able to change the dates.
