We're going to Amiens next week because we paid for the hotel and ferry bookings months and months ago and couldn't get the money back. We managed to re-book later in the summer, as late as possible.

The reason we went in April and stayed at the Moulin des Moines was because DH had the upcoming spinal surgery to look forward to. The worst-case scenario was that it wouldn't be successful and would result in his being in a wheelchair, or worse.

We stood in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Picardy in Amiens and I put my hand on his back and prayed very hard to Christ the Healer. DH says he can feel heat through my hand - more heat than a normally-warm hand - and thinks this is called 'reiki'. I don't know much about this, but I've found that it's something I can do. DH finds it comforting.

We went to that area in May just in case it all went bad and we could never go again, never travel like we're used to travelling.

Today we're getting everything ready, cases are already packed and in the car (we have matching small cases, the kind you pull along and can use as 'carry-on' on holiday flights. Amazing how much you can get into one! We're only going for 4 nights. I haven't worn my new shower-jacket this year yet - bought it in Debenhams sale weeks ago. We sort of use the car as our 'space' when we travel.

DH is 'thinking about' mowing the grass. Our lady gardener came on Friday because, although DH can mow the grass, neither of us can get down to do weeding, so she did all that. I've been trimming rose-bushes etc. I washed the bathroom towels, a few bits and pieces like that. We usually leave early and have breakfast at Maidstone services before going to the ferry.

As we were out there putting things into the car, our neighbour dropped by and said 'week after next OK for you?' This is the work he's going to do at the back, rebuilding a crumbling brick wall and making shallow steps instead of the slope which is there at present.

Off to sunny Blackpool on Monday for 3days, its a trip OH has wanted to do for years but I've managed to stave it off till now... its not my thing but I know he'll love it. He's having a bit of a depressing year so I booked it as a suprise , letting the train take the strain and I think I can bear all the glitz and hooha for a couple of days for his sake... I've checked the b and b on trip advisor and bought some tickets for things there on Tesco Clubcard then we'll have more dosh to spend on meals etc... He's like an excited kid , pity I can't drum up the same enthusiasm but I'll slap on a smile and we'll have a ball in the Pleasure Beach Park... hahaha.

I discovered the other day that DH has NEVER been to Blackpool. I think we have to go ... although I'm not sure either of us will really enjoy it.

I don't do rollercoasters since the one at Legoland stopped, several times, with me on it ...

I could reduce DH to a quivering wreck by taking him up the new tower at Blackpool, saw it on the news when it first opened, glass floor on the observation platform anyone? He'll be hanging onto the wall behind him!

But I think the lights have to be seen once in your life, don't they?
