The Irish Guards lost a lot of men in July 1916, fighting over the Schwaben Redoubt, it was the taking of it in October that year when my Grandad won his DCM it was with the Cambbridgeshire Regiment, this was about this, we attended the service, and the presentation after.

If I remember correctly, there was an attempt to improve national nutritional standards after the Boer War - didn't really work.

Yes, this was the time when it became clear what the Industrial Revolution, crowded unhygienic housing, polluted atmosphere, inadequate food, you name it, had done to the health and well-being of the working classes. Many men who volunteered were turned down.

Looking at taking the grandchildren somewhere at half term. Does spending the kids inheritance on their kids count at SKIing?

As long as it is money YOU are spending on what YOU want, then yes!

The original tower is on the Clandeboye Estate near Bangor. My grandmother spent some of her childhood on the estate where my great grandmother worked. Bangor is a nice town to visit close to Belfast with a good train service. Both my grandfathers fought in WW1 but I don't know which divisions they were in but at least one would have been likely to be in the Ulster Division. They were only teenagers when they were in France, one was underage and lied to join up. I thought about them when I went to France and saw the graves. They could easily have died as so many young men did.

Hallo Mumps - its a small world. My late mother was a children's Nanny on the Clandeboye's estate. I guess that would be in the early thirties.

  • Hi everybody - its me again. Its been a crazy year one way and another but still managed some skating over to Holland. My next big adventure is a cruise in November to the caribbean with Holland America - Rotterdam. Any tips for this virgin cruiser would be a help. Never realised what a complicated business selecting this, that and the other before you go turns out to be.

  • Oh that sounds great, MW. Can't help with any advice, but I'd be interested in hearing what people say too!

My tip is be very careful about hygiene, I'm afraid it's always a problem where large numbers of people are cooped up together.

Bit later than when my granny was living there. My grandfather's sister would have been working there then. She was a maid of somesort. They were obviously big employers in the local area. Was your mother from Bangor?
