Now all I have to worry about is the mosquitoes in the Caribbean. They seem to love me. Guess it will be all fun and Deet!

They love me too. But I have heard of a remedy. Sounds bizarre, but if you eat Marmite for two weeks before you go, your perspiration contains something that repels mosquitoes.
    Have a lovely time.

And one of the Avon Skin So Soft body lotions is meant to repel the Scottish midges, they can't market it as such but many people swear by it!

Is Bovril OK? I find Marmite too strong. MW:cool:

I'm not sure because I don't know what it is that Marmite contains that is supposed to repel them.
Are both Marmite and Bovril yeast extracts?
I had heard about the Avon Skin So Soft too. But I did not realise it was just for Scottish midgies.

Bovril is a beef extract, I think.

I don't know if the Avon SSS stuff is JUST for Scottish midges, I have heard people think it's more effective than most of the things actually sold as deterrents.

I love Marmite and eat it regularly; I also bought the Skin So Soft, stocking up when it's on offer. Apparently, it's the green one which repels mossies and midges.

    I rarely get bitten.

    Hey! Ski-ing to Cornwall!

Just booked some time at the beginning of November. Some friends of ours run a Christian Retreat Centre in Cornwall, we are going for nine days! They only took it over last December so we have not visited it yet. We hope to combine retreat and holiday. Can't wait! This is it:

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Hi Polly. Thanks for the Avon Cream tip. Just been on their website and bought two sprays (they are on offer) Anything that stops me getting bitten is worth trying. My blood must be sweet. My husband was never bitten. Next thing to sort out is wether or not I need a Yellow Fever jab for Trinidad. Some say yes and some say no. I have found out that Boots do them so I will pop in and see what they say.

Off now to watch some TV.

  • Just back from skiing on the Isle of Wight - the sunshine isle lived up to its reputation.
Also a few days before and after in Hampshire, Sussex and Surrey, which included looking up some relatives and trying to find houses where we used to live as children and our grandparents' houses. Some success but sadly some have gone and been relaced by flats.

DH is not interested in thinking about any more trips till next summer, so I shall think about going somewhere by myself.
