As long as it is money YOU are spending on what YOU want, then yes!

Well I'll go for it then. We can't decide whether to go to Bristol or London. The eldest is very keen on museums and he would like to see the SS Great Britain and the new science museum in Bristol, on the other hand there are lots of museums in London.

    Decisions, decisions.

Bit later than when my granny was living there. My grandfather's sister would have been working there then. She was a maid of somesort. They were obviously big employers in the local area. Was your mother from Bangor?

no Mum was a Londoner. She seemed to have been employed each time in London. Best job she has was a trip to India as nanny to the new head of the Punjab police department. She was there for a year until WWII broke out and she was sent back to England. MW:cool:

My tip is be very careful about hygiene, I'm afraid it's always a problem where large numbers of people are cooped up together.

Thanks (I think) :( Errata, there are 1400 plus on our trip. I think I will add some anticeptic wipes and hand gel to my packing list. Will report in December. MW:cool:

Oh, come to Bristle, definitely! I'm a great believer in doing what they want at the time, IYSWIM. And you can't fail to have a good time here.

    How old are they, btw?

I read a blog post about going on a cruise recently, there were crew on hand at all points offering antibac, with all solemnity, and then the writer went to a church service where someone read a poem about today possibly being your last one, at which point a certain amount of giggling started and someone said if it was that bad they were going for a G&T ...

Hi Polly :D Nice to hear from you. Its been a crazy year with my health basically - details are tooooo booring. On top of that my mother went into the last phase of her life and died in February aged 99 and a half!! She had a good run for her money, bless her.

Right now I am in a flat spin with 5 weeks to go before a 32 day cruise from Southampton to the Caribbean and the Dutch Antillen. Something I have always wanted to do but really never got around to doing. Its on the ROTTERDAM from the Holland America Line, lovely boat with just 1400 passengers, I guess half of them will be Dutch as it sails out of Rotterdam itself. Its all quite intimidating really but its a great excuse to overall my wardrobe and add some lovely bits and pieces for the formal dinners and general socialising.

My social life died around the time my husband did, and apart from trips to Holland I don't get out much!!!!&@**. It will be fun and the meer thought of not worrying about shopping, housework, cooking and all the other energy draining daily activities, has gone to my head. 32 days of sheer indulgence - it don't get better than that!:rotfl:Didn't you go on a cruise last year - I seem to remember something. Any tips for this virgin cruiser?

I promise to be more active on the forum again, but last year I never seemed to be off the machine and nothing got done. Hey Ho!

Will report on the trip when I get back.;):p:o:beer: MW

Hope this year will be better for you, MW. You're making a good start, anyway. We have only cruised once - hated it - we saw the sea and places for an afternoon.

We like coach tours - high up, travelling through villages and countryside, that's where we really see how people live.

Most of our ski-ing is to the USA, we have a baby grandson there now. Off again in November.

I hope you have a wonderful time. As far as novovirus is concerned, and that's the most common of outbreaks on cruise ships, frequent hand washing with soap and warm water for the length it takes you to sing God Save the Queen three times is the most effective protection. The most common place for the bugs to settle is handrails, door handles and anything else that a lot of passengers touch a lot.
Cruising is a wonderful experience and you deserve it.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Thanks Errata. I did a lot of reading up on the various sicknesses on a cruise - quite depressing but I plan to be careful. I never really fancied the whole cruise scene but friends have been telling me how much they love it. I have met up with a couple who are on the cruise and this is their third cruise and they have never had a problem. Our cruise is only 1400 people so its not one of those "pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap" jobs so I will keep my fingers crossed. Will report back in detail in December. MW:cool:

Thanks Polly. Great news about your grandson, congrats. I guess cruising is like everything else, love or hate. Will report. I too love the USA. I have a great friend in California who I visit every few years. She lives half way between LA and San Diego. Love the place, love the people and love the weather.

I usually have a big holiday every five years and visit another very old friend in Oz. I really love the country but OH those flies!! Take all the fun away. They live on a property of 1500 acres, he is a vet and she helps him. Its always a lovely time and we travel around to see more of the country. In 2005 I did those love train journeys on the Indian Pacific from Sydney to Adelaide and on to the Ghan for the trip to Darwin. Memorable. Darwin had more flies than NSW. I had to invest in a hat with a fly veil, boy I looked a right dipstick but it kept the flies off. They get EVERYWHERE - I shudder now when I think of them.

Now all I have to worry about is the mosquitoes in the Caribbean. They seem to love me. Guess it will be all fun and Deet!
