Hey, ski-ing with a difference (costs nothing, very MSE!).

I've got two free tickets to Grand Designs Live by using a code I got from this site. Next Friday only.

Won't cost us anything as we can travel free in the West Midlands County with our bus passes and can take a picnic made at home :)

It's my 40th Wedding Anniversary treat. What a Bargain!

Here is the code if you are interested:

    kbu11

    and the website is

(Edited to add: Must have my photo taken with Kevin McLeod! :) )

    Hi All

Just signing in from Spain where we are at the moment. Had a busy summer in the touring caravan, also helping DS & GF move into a flat they are buying in London (ouch!!), and helping them with some alterations. Chilling now for a few weeks.

    Enjoy Grand Designs 7DW

DS & MW what are you up to these days?

    Take care all DG

I started a thread on stopping savings and spending cash but it has been relegated to the back of beyond. It is very very important for many of us `non working older ones` because of the fact that we are losing value on a daily basis. I would like a shiny new thread that is all inclusive as skiing etc might put some people off, as it is about preserving our savings even if it means spending now, albeit on small items, funeral plans, white goods and so on. Can someone help me to word such a thread so that it doesn`t have the word `savings` in the title. I fear that even on mse, we older ones have become second class citizens and our needs ignored

edit: I am thinking on my feet re a few titles

    `time to cash in`

`enough cash in the bank? Time to spend before inflation takes all`

    `time to stop accumulating cash`

I could do with your help on getting this title sorted :)

You are right Kittie, some folk seem to think their saving are for their children, and not for them. We also even though rather young are thinking of pre-paying for funerals, as that way at least, that amount is not considering when looking at death duties, if they would apply.

We acknowledged that once we stopped working, saving from private pensions was not a viable consideration, especially as it will still be over a year until one of us gets our first Government pension (due to ages). While there were any savings over ISA's we would put the allowed amount into cash ISA's, but that is all done now, and if we want something it will have to be withdrawn. It does make us ask the questions Martin recommends, about needing, and using, rather than wanting, but if we decide it will be needed, and/or used, then we will still get it.

I do not think I would be much use on your proposed new thread, as we feel that we have earned it, so if we decided to get something we do. I doubt if we would spend everything, as we would always want a fall back cushion. However, by August 2014 we will be £200 a week better off between us.

  • Thanks Donny gal. I have actually just now changed my first post to be more inclusive. I cannot change the heading though and daren`t start a new thread as it would just disappear. I hope we get more posters

I like the idea of your new thread Kittie. I am "financially comfortable" in retirement but definitely not rich.

I find it more difficult to spend my money on me rather than my family but I'm trying to change.

Your proposed thread would be a great help to people like me.

    Kittie

How about Old Style Inflation Beating by Spending Wisely. That might help to stop it getting relegated. You could give it some momentum by getting people who were around in the 70s to reminisce a bit. Once a thread has a few posts it is less likely to drop down the board which is when they tend to close it or move it

    Good idea, Kittie.

It could be a blend of 'oldstyle' and our ski-ing. OH and I are concerned about interest rates on saving. However, we know that if they go up, we'll be helping DD with her mortgage.
