I couldn't find the Prima one anywhere so I bought the Panasonic. That was sold out in Argos, Comet and John Lewis. The only place i could get it was Debenhams. My first loaf was a disaster. It didn't rise and fell apart when I tipped it out of the tin. Don't understand what I did wrong because all my measurements of ingredients were spot on and I made a hole in the flour so that the yeast was at the bottom covered by flour (forgot to put yeast in before the flour)

I'm not even sure if it mixed properly. Suspected the tin wasn't quite home on the base so that the mixing paddle thing might not have been moving but later I tried to see if I could have attached it better but I couldn't get it better than I had done it originally. Once home the tin can be swiveled on its motor lightly inside the machine. Is this normal? I also tried moving the paddle manually and it only goes about 90 degrees before the motor end stop, so it must be on ok.
  • Hi there - I have tried to buy the PrimaABM 31 and having spoken to a lovely guy actually at Prima - they have all sold out and will not have any more in. They do have the Prima ABM 36 which only (??) makes up to the 2.5 lb loaf. We have the Daily Mail to thank for this!! Anyway - I also spoke to Panasonic who said that they also do s SD 254 (as well as the rated 255 in the article) only difference is the 254 does not do Rye and it does not automatic Raisin nut dispensing .....Would I use these functions???? The 254 costs about £80 ( I have tried getting them cheaper by searching but no luck) So - the Prima 36 costs about £60 and the Panasonic about £80 and the 255 about 100 - Has anyone tried the Prima one or which one do you think makes the better bread???? I am new to this but really fancy one! Many thanks for your help. PS I have tried bread make in a breadmaker and I dont know why, but it tasted a bit sweeter than shop bought bread?? Is this normal please?

Apologies if there is already a thread - a quick check and I didn't see one.

A friend gave me a Prima breadmaker a few years ago and it's now dying. I hate the blooming thing anyway, as I can never get the loaves out of the tin - the paddle always gets stuck to the bottom of the machine and I've sweated a few pints trying to release the loaves from the tin!

Now I'm ready to spend some cash on a new one, but I'm overwhelmed with choice. I don't want anything fancy, nothing that make a gazillion different breads - I just want white bread.

I'm interested in something that is fuss free and easy to get out of the tin.

Your suggestions please (with model numbers if you don't mind as there are so many out there). You can tell me ones to steer clear of too. I bought a bifnett one from Lidls, but took it back as it was rubbish - that's the first bad gadget I've bought by Bifnett, everything else has been wonderful, so I was a little disappointed.

    Thank you!

It has to be Panasonic, I know you only want white bread & nothing fancy, but as others, and I, will tell you, Panasonic always works

On offer at present on Amazon SD254 £59.99

I'm really looking to save money anyway shape or form.

So looking to cut back on food shopping.

One thing I have noticed is the price of bread

I have looked at getting a breadmaker but I would some advice before buying one.

How long does the bread last?
    How easy is to make?
Would you say that it does save you money?
which make have you got and would you recomend it?
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

    Hi Winniepooh,

    To answer your questions,

Homemade bread doesn't last long in this house because it normally gets eaten very quickly, but I find homemade bread doesn't stay as fresh as shop bought because it doesn't contain the same preservatives.

Bread is extremely easy to make in a breadmaker (my 14 year old son makes ours regularly) and almost as easy to make by hand. With the breadmaker you literally measure out the ingredients and add them to the machine in the correct order according to your instruction manual. Switch it on and leave it for approximately three hours and you have a loaf. Total preparation time is around 5 minutes.

I think it definitely saves money, particularly when making 'speciality' breads with nuts, sundried tomatoes and seeds etc. For old styler opinions on that have a look at these threads:

Is it really worth buying a breadmaker???

    Is homemade bread REALLY cheaper?

Energy Cost of a bread machine

Postive and negative comments on breadmakers please?

I have a Morphy Richards fastbake breadmaker but recently have been making bread more and more by hand because I prefer the oven baked texture. I think you'll find that the most often recommended machine in Old Style is the panasonic, but it is one of the more expensive. There was a very recent thread on which machine to buy so I'll add your thread to that one later:

Just picked up my brand spanking new MR rapid bake. I already have it set up and it is making its very first loaf of cheese and onion bread! Yum Yum.

Looked at the Panny's but just out of my price range. Had a MR several years ago and loved it so fingers crossed will be fresh bread for tea tonight.

I have a MR too. I love the cheese and onion bread and so do all my visitors. My immediate family just doesn't like the home made bread, but do like the rolls. Make the dough in the BM then cook in the oven.
I buy 4 aldi 37p loaves a week and make about 3 loads of rolls.
