Panasonic here (without raisin/nut dispenser). Got it when on offer ages ago on Amazon, so much less than the RRP, and it's still going strong years later. Can't fault it. I have done all kinds of loaves in it, and just throw any fruit etc in with other ingredients.

Not the cookworks from argos one.

First one lasted just a year (used 1 a week at most). The second one which was swapped like for like doesn't actually do a 2lb loaf (only 1lb or 1lb) so I would have to do twice as much to get the same amount of bread. Also means I have to weigh the flour instead of just chucking the packet mix in (ok I am LAZY). So I end up with bits of packets. Also this one I think I will take back as I don't think it rises properly.

I believe there is now a model with a yeast dispenser too but I have no idea what advantage that might bring.

It's a gimmick - they say it's to keep the yeast separate from the other ingredients until the machine is ready to do the mixing - the salt can kill off the yeast.

I've got the model with the yeast dispenser and it's very, very noisy when it releases the yeast. The noise only continues for a few seconds but it's enough to wake the whole household if it's set to work during the night.

I previously had the model without the yeast dispenser and never had any problems with salt killing off the yeast. As long as you put the ingredients in in the right order they don't come into contact anyway.

I have the Panasonic SD2501, with nut dispenser, and I absolutely love it! I bake bread every other day, and use the smallest loaf usually with the darkest crust - both my husband and I love it.

Make sure you have a good quality knife, and a sharpener on hand, plus a chopping board as you'll be cutting lots of fresh bread and rolls soon!

Panasonic definitely. I originally bought a second hand Panasonic from ebay after reading about it here. It cost £30 all in. I loved it and used it for a year, then decided to splash out on a new one with a dispenser. No regrets at all (other than they now do a stainless steel version which I would have preferred). My daughter now has my ebay one and uses it all the time too.

If you can afford it, go for a Panasonic. This is from the very happy owner of a Cooksworks one from Argos, it's great when I'm just making bread for the two of us, but it would be fantastic to have a bigger loaf size when we entertain.

    I couldn't resist this:

    Why not ask David Cameron?;)

Amazingly, I then read an article in today's paper telling us that Mr Cameron's breadmaker is a Panasonic!!
