??? It's a network of US banks. The British Nationwide can't join it.

The website is directed at providers, not consumers - but it's nevertheless useful to know it exists. Any customer from any bank can use one of its ATMs. Any charge will be from their own bank, not the US bank.

nope you've lost me .....i put in a zip code and it tells me the location of a load of atm's .if my bank isn't part of the scheme i probably pay a charge. you inform me that nationwide can't be part of that scheme so the chances are i'll pay for a withdrawal using my cash card.
please tell me if i've got it wrong ergo what relevance has it got to using the nationwide card?

Nationwide (the UK bank) doesn't have any cash machines in the US - so it can't join a network of cash machines in the US. Nor can most other Britsh banks.

But if I've read that website right that network of machines in the US is free for anyone to use, not just customers of member banks. But ICBW - it's not 100% clear. If I am wrong, the network is of no particular use to British visitors
  • i'm sometimes a bit stupid but i realise that nationwide don't have cashpoints in the US ...it of course doesn't stop them having reciprocal alliances which allow you to use other banks or networks atm's . i don't know whether there's a bar on them joining something like allpoint but i'll defer if you know different .... i believe you've not understood the allpoint scheme.... if you look into the site it tells members what to do if the surcharge screen appears ie imho the atm's charge people for use of the machine if they haven't got an agreement like the one via allpoint.
a search of the atm's in an area i know particularly well indicates that indeed these are in locations where you would probably have to pay eg gas stations and small shops

Hmm I think you are right hammy. Having now understood the scheme a little better - Allpoint is of no earthly use to UK cardholders - it doesn't have any bearing on whether they will be charged or not. I still don't think a UK bank can join it.

AFAIK Nationwide UK has no reciprocal arrangements with any overseas bank. (Nationwide USA - no connection - IS in the scheme which could cause confusion...).

I just tried withdrawing cash from a Washington Mutual ATM which was in CVS and the sticker said the ATM was part of 'allpointnetwork'. I was charged $2 for the privilege. That mean the WM is not free and that the 'allpointnetwork' just means that anyone signed up to their 'network' will not pay a fee on withdrawal whereas if they used any other ATM belonging to another bank they probably would. I am fearing that whatever happening in the last 3 weeks to my regular free Citibank withdrawal using my Nationwide card is now everywhere and that there is no ATM offering charge free access to Nationwide debit card holders or any other cards for that matter. Its still a great card but I think the days are gone of no loading at both ends.If anyone has info. to the contrary you could save me and others about $2 a day.
    Cheers,

Have you tried the ATMs in Target or Walmart? Remember a few years ago when more and more ATM operators in UK were charging for withdrawals the supermarkets were forced to act, to only allow on their sites non charging ATMs? Did the same happen in USA?.....I've never been charged by a machine in Walmart or Target in about 16 trips.
