That's a good start at least you will both be working together, at least he understands what you are trying to achieve. Good luck.

I am really lucky I suppose that OH has absolutely no interest in money, he earns a very good salary, but rarely spends any money. he is quite happy as long as he is well fed and has a clean house, clean clothes etc. Since we have been doing this challenge we have siphoned quite a bit of cash into savings for our future life in Malta.

    Hi All,

Just a very quick one this morning. I have 2 hours for ETD and still have lots to do - like pack. I was going to have a good night sleep last night as it is going to be a long day today but had to finish my monthly report and it was 3 am by the time it was finished - oops - might have cup of coffee before leaving. So wishing everybody a fantastic weekend and catch up with you on Monday. Logging off now :hello:

Good afternoon frugalbuddies, hopefully Marru got away on time and remembered to finish packing :)

Sun is shining here, I'm on deadline for work and I have DGD here desperate to get out to play on her bike! It's such a nice day, though, that I'm thinking of going to the park or the beach this afternoon instead, just as soon as I can get the post done. Will catch up with the posts soon, must finish work asap, make lunch and amuse DGD until dinner time.

Bails, after your mentioning travel, I meant to say that cousin and I had been discussing going (Scottish) island hopping this summer and another friend has also said she's love to go. I know it isn't quite sun, sand and sangria, but it could be fun attempting to cram as many islands into a week as was physically possible AND sticking to a budget! LOL

  • Hi all... I know it's been a while since I last wrote anything, but life's been a bit hectic over in my little world... ;)

I've been for a job interview, which went well and they'd love to get me doing some work - but there's a catch, which you'll all love (and I'm terrified of).

    It's freelance work, I'd be self-employed!!! :eek: :T :eek::confused: :eek: :huh: :think:

One month, I could earn loads, one month I may earn nothing. Depends entirely on the work, and I'd have to live as frugally as possible to make the money stretch, in case I don't get any work...

For those who are wondering, I'm a language-graduate so I'd be going into teaching English (TEFL/TESOL), which I've already trained for, and translating as well. There's no guarantee though, or minimum wage, I'd be entirely at the mercy of whatever work is out there...

On a side note, I've now planted a potato, which has a few baby shoots coming out, so we'll see how that goes... I managed to make a lovely pesto earlier this week, from my home grown basil. I'm off to Paris in 10 days, for a few days with work, so I have already done a few frozen meals for my OH, so that she doesn't have to spend loads while I'm away. And my OH is starting to take to the idea of making fresh mint tea, thanks to all the mint that's taking over our kitchen windowsill! :T

As for the other comments I've just ready, yes, I definitely think that you/we/the people on this board should write a frugal recipe book... I think Martin would probably get behind it, we'll all buy it, and it'd be a huge success. Mind you, if the first half of the book is all about how to grow your own veg, in order to have the essential ingredients for the recipes, then it won't exactly compete with the 30-minute recipes that I have - more 30-week recipes, by the time the veg etc grows! :rotfl:

Anyway, keep up the good frugalling, maybe I'll have more time on my hands to get more involved with all this - and if I have less (or no) income, then I may have no choice! :)

PS Am I really one of the very few males on this board, especially seeing as I'm under 30!?
Having fun trying to save money without going over the top and living on budget food all the time...

There's MrDT, but apart from that, I think so!

Which is exactly where I worked before moving back 'home'. That's where I realised that Scottish English is a completely different language to English English or American English and that many American forces personnel have Scottish-style senses of humour! :rotfl: (To all on base at Lakenheath, Mildenhall and Feltwell, y'all have a good day, now! ;) )

Mollymop - I have been to Mull a few times because every time I visited friend in Oban, I'd end up on the ferry. In fact, that was the first ferry I ever took my own kids on (not even going to count how many years ago), and I'd like to take DGD to visit 'Balamory' one day. :D

SophiesMum and DdraigGoch, I am really pleased that you are both happy with your OHs and I don't mean to disrespect that at all, I just have a different opinion. My OH would be more than happy if I took the reins and organised our finances but I feel really strongly that we should both have a shared repsonsibility for it. This is pretty hard of course, especially as we have entirely different financial upbringings - my parents are anally good with money, his are entirely hopeless! - but we are working on it, slowly.
Nyk, I would love to island hop round Scotland, been on my 'to do' list for ages. Think it'll be one to do with the kids...I hope you go, it would be awesome!
WWTBR, is there no way you could get a regular gig somewhere so you always knew there was some income and then see how the freelance works out? I do know what you mean, I worked freelance with disturbed children, and some months I earnt a LOT of money, and others very little; I found it quite unsettling at the time, not least because I had massive debt hanging over my head (my ex-fiance's). Good luck with whatever you decide, and yes, you and MrDT are the only blokes, and he's a young'un too!

WW2BR - hopefully we won't lead you too far astray but we are being led astray by Mr DT and his homebrewing escapades at the moment. And as for the bumblebee escapades, well! What can I say? (apart from, 'fetch my stripey jumper!') :rotfl: :rotfl:

Bails - We can buy an island hopper ticket that lasts 15 days for as many sailings as we can fit in and it only costs £73 each, plus bicycles can go free. It's the accommodation that's the expensive part and the facts that I don't own a bicycle and haven't cycled (other than exercise bike) for years don't help. However... I ain't past it yet! (I don't think?) :o:D Cousin & I contemplated asking for work on the ferries - as a pair of deck scrubbers - to pay the fares but the rest of the family weren't too taken by the job titles. :rotfl: :rotfl: The Mr S 2-man tent for a tenner is looking better by the minute!
