Welcome to Part 2 of 'Living on £4000 for a Year'.
(The second quarter of 2008)

NEW PART 3 THREAD IS HERE

You can find Part 1 here for the first quarter of 2008. This will give you an idea of how, where, when, and what this challenge is about and provide you with plenty of extra reading material on the subject of frugal living and a tight budget.

Congratulations to everyone who is still with us for this extraordinary challenge, I hope you are enjoying your frugal routines and are beginning to reap some benefits, even if it's just a new awareness of where the money goes and how it gets spent. Don't worry too much if you have spent more than a quarter of your budget within the first quarter of the year - it's been winter, heating and lighting is needed in far greater supplies that during summer months and the aftermath of the festive period can, and does, take its toll.

Now we are entering the second quarter of 2008 and with that comes the new tax year, price increases, decreases, tax changes and everything else that Budgets entail. It also means an increase in the amount of tax free savings we can squirrel away for our futures, but that brings it's own challenge... the possibility of beating the budget. :D

From now until 31st December 2008 all those participating in this challenge with £4000 SHOULD have £3000 left, but that may not be the case. We now have until the end of June to hone our frugal living, hopefully without the added expense of trying to keep warm.

Here's to Frugaldom - good luck to all and have fun this Spring

    Hello Nyk,

I have also updated the link in the challenges thread. I have been absolutely rubbish in March. I will update my totals tomorrow when I reconcile my bank account.

On a positive note, I sent application to the college today. I haven't calculated how I will manage financially during the college but I have fair idea. I just feel it is the right thing for me to do. Fingers crossed.

Sorry I haven't been thanking people as much I used to as I don't get all the email notifications and by the time I get to the site there is sooooo much to catch up on but I do very much appreciate all the posts as without this thread I wouldn't have the confidence to jump into the unknown and become a student again.

Catch up with you all late this evening and tomorrow with my terrifying totals.

    Take care,

    Marru

  • erm...............hello............I'm back after my sabbatical.........

I saw the new thread and I've never deleted the old one from my subscribed threads.

although I was going to 'rest' from the thread until 1 May, a bit of a fortunate situation with my first months salary has meant I can come back now.

Although I've only been in my new salaried job for 2 weeks, I was paid on Friday and I wasn't taxed as I haven't earned enough this financial year in the eyes of the tax man (although I'll have self employed wages to be taxed on later thisyear) so I got (untaxed) around the same amount I'll get next month after tax. I think. I'm still waiting to see my pay slip!

Anyway, it means that this month, I got £600 salary (I was expecting about £250 which is why I was going to wait until next month to re-join you) and then I'll have my AQA on top which I've just logged off of for the last time this month, so I will have £1,120 to play with for the month.

It will still be tight, after all the bills, I'll have £120 left (eek) of which £70 of that is money for shopping from my OH.

However, I think this is a good time to re-join the challenge. New thread, new quarter and a full month's money to budget with.

I was a bit naughty in the time I've been away. I had my hair cut which cosst £40 (ouch!) but in my new job, there is access to the hairdressing students, where a cut and blow dry is £10 so I might be brave and try that next time! I also went a bit mad on Saturday in an organic butchers and am still ashamed at the cost (it was extortionate to be honest, even for an organic butcher) so it will be back to counting and balancing every penny.

I've been making lots of HM bread and I even made HM hot cross buns which were amazing and there are still 4 in the freezer ;)

Soooooooooooooo, if you'll have me back, erm, here I am!

I'll start on £3,000 for the rest of the year, I think I'd spent £1000 when I ran away so I'm not far out on the figures.

A big well done everyone so far. :T Looking forward to hanging in for the next quarter :)

I have really had my cheapest quarter. I choose to pay a lot of the big bills annually as it can work out cheaper. I still have the car tax, car insurance, house insurance and my holiday to come off in the next three quarters. Thankfully they are spread out a bit. Although the next month will mean a spend almost equal to the first three months as I pay for my holiday.

I have edited down my goal :D:D

I started at £5500. Now I am going for the £4000 plus child benefit for one child. I think this gives me £4977, can anyone confirm?
  • Hi everyone,
Just popping in to try out the new thread:D Frugal pony is now settled in his stable and tucked up for the night. Will be sitting down with DD later to do a final reckoning of her finances and see how much she owes me in total. It was really difficult taking money out of my isa savings for frugal pony.

No spend day for me today on the challenge, think I was still in shock from the isa thing:D . Need to make a loaf tonight but apart from that just chilling.I am still fresh to the challenge having only joined at the end of Feb, so well done to all the frugalites who are now a quarter way through:T :T :T . Hope we are all still here at the end of the year.

Marru - Good luck with your studies, hope everything falls into place for you.
