Nyk how about house partly underground?

I saw that episode! GOOD HOUSE! That was the episode that the wind turbine kept changing in the background, obviously where the cutting room had forgotten they couldn't control the weather between filming and takes :rotfl:

Mumzy - I'm bouncing between working, MSE, eBid and having wacky ideas. I've detailed my next idea HERE on the interest beater challenge thread :D

A-ha, now I know what a Nissen hut is, lol! Not so keen on the 'oiled cloth widows instead of glass' though :rotfl:
Hmm, the weather could be a problem but I was reading that if you do it correctly it will be okay; need to research that some more me thinks.
OH is keen too, although he hasn't seen the price of land yet :rotfl:But you never know, we'll keep our eyes open and I'll keep researching it, still got to be cheaper than buying a house down here I reckon.

Speaking of GD, did anyone see the house in an underground missile base in America? NO natural light at all

I would LOVE to buy a disused military base - imagine owning the entire base??? We live near a small "disused" ex-miltary airfield where we took DS for his preliminary driving lessons! It's a great place but he had to pull over to let a small plane land! :rotfl:  He had video on his mobile (or perhaps digital camera was in car at time, can't remember) and filmed it for posterity.

I've been down inside a disused nuclear bunker. If you ever visit the Fife area of Scotland, it is well worth the visit to 'the secret bunker'. The place is absolutely massive and was built (secretly) to house the entire British Government in the event of nuclear war. I have loads of photos, as I've been there quite often for various reasons, but they have a good website. Worth the visit if it's to see what you can do with a bunker! :rotfl:

Now, I am one happy bunny because look what I just received in my emails

When I get that piece of land for my small holding I shall have a cob house for myself and a Nissen hut for stabling./quote]

Talking of stabling, I am just having (a very necessary) refurb done on my stables. I live in a very controlling conservation area and am being told that I need to apply for full planning permission (£150 or so), to be allowed to get the asbestos roof removed and replace it with something not poisonous!!!!

    Am not happy....

GGRRRRRRRRRRR!:mad: I hate EXPENSIVE automated telephone banking systems!!!!!! As a result I have had to write a letter and will need to go into the branch itself - so much for the 21st Century:rolleyes:

Thanks for the link, Shaz, it's really interesting, somewhere I would visit if close enough and certainly a lifestyle I would consider. I wonder if they all work on site or if they have to commute to work? :D

Bails, sorry to hear about your telephone banking experience - I HATE automated telephone services, especially the ones that keep you on hold and play stupid music interspersed with stupid messages and charge you for the 'priviledge'! It should be 0800 if they want our custom and promt response by a qualified person, not some script-reading 'this job will do until I find a better one' type person. (Apologies to any telesales folks reading this who actually like their jobs, I just haven't met any yet.)

I popped back out to the garden for an hour to tidy up around the edge of veggie plot. The potatoes shoots are sprouting at an alarming rate and will need covered over again this weekend! Whilst going around the edge nearest the hedge, I spotted what looks like a strawberry plant, although I'm not 100% sure. I've dug it up and now have it in one of my wooden planters, just in case. I'm also hoping that the brambles are going to grow in the pots I brought from last house! I've placed garden canes around the entire plot and have ordered 50m of bird/fruit netting to stop the pesky cats using the plot as a giant litter tray. Next problem is snails, although the bigger ones shouldn't be able to fit through the netting. Must search for humane traps to see if I can make homemade equivalents.

My windowsill garden is also expanding! The garlic cloves I stuck in the pot last week have sprouted already! And what looks like my first tray of brocolli has sprouted about an inch overnight! How sad am I? Excited to see my food growing! :rotfl: I class this as free entertainment.

Catshark, is there any way you could do the renovations without touching the asbestos? I got told it was only harmful to work with but fine if secure, intact and left well alone.
