Lidl's own concentrated screenwash, it is good down to -40 I think, I use it, it never freezes.

    Cheers, I'll take a look!
BTW, this thread was started in 2005.;)

We needed screenwash in 2005, we still need it now :D

Amusingly I was buying screenwash in Halfords the other day. Compared two bottles, both identical except one said it was good to -17 and the other said it was good to -6. They had the same barcode and everything.

Asked the staff about it and they explained that it's Halfords' !!!! covering as up until recently there is no way we were ever going to see -6 but now that we are seeing that, they've revised the figures so they don't get sued if it freezes before -17.

Stuck it in the Mondeo, undiluted, and sure enough I had green ice crystals growing out of my washer jets the other day when it was -8.

    ASDA do a concentrated screen wash. 5 litres = £3.00 or 2 for £5.00. 2.5 litres = £1.50 or 2 for £2.00.

The normal dilution is 4 parts water to 1 part stuff. The winter dilution is 2 parts water to 1 part stuff.

The blurb on their website mentions -5 degrees, but doesn't say if this is neat, or at any dilution.

  • My washer jets haven't worked all week and I have the 2.5 litre Asda stuff in. I used the last of it up with 2 parts water a month or so ago.

Last year I bought some stuff which was supposedly good down to -20C but even at -2C it froze solid!

The stuff im using hasn't frozen in the washer bottle, but where the snow has fallen the jets have become blocked with ice.

  • We been conned and conned on screen wash, many brands not disclosing the performance of the product, some winter products only protecting to just below freezing.

We've been on a motorway with a dirty windscreen 200 miles away with a suddenly frozen washer system, it should be a criminal offence to sell Winter Screen Wash that does not protect sufficiently (or it should at least say what it does).

Halfords stuff in Dec 2011 is £7 for 1 litre that protects to just -27C if used neat, thats about £28 to fill you washer bottle up (4 litres required in our case), diluted it's useless (ie: -9C), we had below -20C here last winter for over a week (Tewkesbury).

After a lot of ringing round (hours), we are pleased to say APD Motor Factors came to our rescue, 5 litre concentrate protects to -40C, diluted 1:1 we think it's OK for -13C.

Here's the beast bit, it cost us less than £3 over the counter, we bought a four pack (20 litres concentrate) for £8 + vat. (Polygard Arctic Screen Wash)

I'm using rather a lot of screenwash this winter, surely there must be some home made alternative? I know you're not supposed to use washing up liquid...
I've always carried a squirty bottle of diluted washing up liquid in my van. But I don't really have a worry about it damaging the paintwork. I use it 2 or 3 times a week in this weather to clear the side windows with a squeegee. Works a treat. It's also perfect for when the windscreen washers freeze up.
