Screenwash?

  • Hi John,

Quite right. They reckon that most cases where an alternative source (air con, cooling towers etc) can't be found, instances of Legionella are caused by poor maintenance of washer bottles.

The problem comes when water is kept at temperatures close to 37oC, as this is the optimum temperature for most living organisms to function and reproduce. Cold water should be kept below 20oC ideally, and hot water above 50oC at furthest from the boiler. These precautions mean an inhospitable environment for most water-borne bacteria.

Where its not possible to control the water temperature (such as water kept close to a car's engine) other means of inhibiting the bacteria must be used. Most washer fluids contain alcohol (usually ethanol / isopropanol) which inhibits bacterial growth (think about how we preserve fruits in brandy etc)

Remember to follow the dilution ratio on the bottle of screenwash, as using a concentrate without dilution can lead to damaged paintwork etc.

Sorry if this seems a stupid question, but are you sure he is diluting it properly?
  • I never have to replace the screen wash as its done in the garage once a year when it goes in for a service .Maybe I don't use it as much as a lot of folk
  • About 3 years ago I visited Halfords and bought a 5 litre screenwash for £3. It is diluted at a ratio of 10% for normal use and up to 50% for severe winter use. At that ratio it has lasted me for 3 years (about 35000 miles. It's finally ran out today so I called in again to Halfords this morning to buy some more. The screenwash is now ready mixed, and costs £4.99 for 5 litres! The only alternative (hidden near the back of the store) costs the same but has to be diluted at 50% for normal use, neat for winter or not suitable for severe winter. To me they've cottoned on to a clear profiteering racket, so I refused to buy it.

I'm now looking for an alternative. Anyone any suggestions??

we use a fair bit, but then our tank holds about 8 litres and does do the windscreen, the rear screen and the head lights.

We have found the best value is the super concentrate one which you dilute with water, we buy it when it on offer to make even more of a saving.

Asda do concentrated screenwash 2.5 litres for £1.49 or 2 for £2.

This time of year I have a strong solution so get through it pretty quickly.

Any recommendations for low temperature alternatives?

I've been using the Halfords 'winter' screenwash and it says it's good to -4C, which is spot on, get to -5C and it turns to gloop, -6C and it won't flow at all!
Since this week has been at -12C then that's no good!

Lidl's own concentrated screenwash, it is good down to -40 I think, I use it, it never freezes.

BTW, this thread was started in 2005.;)
