Screenwash?

  • I know I'm doing exactly what Apples2 is talking about above but Asda have screenwash at £1 for 2.5 litres at the mo. It says on the bottle that it works down to minus 5.

They do also sell a 5 litre bottle of exactly the same stuff for £3, which is on "special offer" of buy 2 for £5, which makes it £1.25 for 2.5 litres; bit cheeky really when it's right next to 2.5 litre bottles at £1 each .

They also do another type at £3 for a litre which says it is good to minus 36, so I figured mixing the two should be ok for our temperatures.

No idea if it is any good and for the record I have no affiliation etc etc with Asda, just thought this was a good deal.

You need screenwash, you can't just use washing up liquid or just water but you can save how much you use. Clean the screen and wipers well with some methalated spirits, that will remove all grime leaving a really clear screen and wipers. Then use some rain x (or similiar) which will help to keep the screen cleaner for longer by helping the dirt and water run off the screen far easier. You won't need to use the screen wash half as much.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

Asda -5 deg stuff will freeze in the windchill on the washer jets. The Lidl stuff is good and cheap but as above dilute it.

I am currently using SONAX Xtreme Antifreeze & clear view. Expensive but it is coping quite well down to the -8 deg that we are having at the moment

I use a carplan concentrated 5 litre bottle I bought about 4 years ago, I still have 2 litres left (after todays fill up). I had run my bottle dry and am driving to France tonight, I decided I would fill it with a strong winter mix so I have just put in a 50/50 mix even though the carplan label says 25% is enough. Last winter I used the same stuff to maybe 30 - 40% and I got floating ice in the bottle (but not frozen solid) and frozen pipes/jets.

I then top up with water throughout the rest of the year and I don't need to add any more "screenwash" until the following winter.

My washer bottle is 2 litre capacity

-5 or so last night and no ice in my bottle or pipes
    50/50 carplan stuff

The rainwater in tubs in the back garden, on the other hand, all frozen solid.

I'm currently using the ASDA concentrated stuff. As above, 5L for £3.00, or 2 x 5L for £5.00. No brainer. It recommends a normal dilution of 25%, so my 10L of concentrate will make 40L of mixture. My washer reservoir takes 2.5L, so this is 16 fill-ups.

Another vote for Rain-X. With this, you don't need to use the washers anywhere near as often.

Then adjust the jets, so that they go within the area swept by the wipers.

For those of you who do wax and polish the car. Put a wee bit on the windscreen and give it a good polish. Dirt doesn't stick as much and one wee squirt cleans all the muck off. Haven't tried it myself but my x used to do that when he was cleaning his car.

    In this weather?

What do you do when your washer bottle is frozen solid and your pump is broken from freezing up?
  • I'm still using the £5.99 Lidl stuff I got last Autumn. 2 parts water 1 part stuff. Hasn't froze yet.
