Touche Z. I see you haven't forgotten (or forgiven) my throwaway comment the other day when you said that, if you were a biscuit, you would be chocolate fingers !Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. William James0

The thinking should first be done at the policy level.
Why? should the public never think about anything and just trust the policy makers? surely not. if no one ever questioned the government or brought things to public notice then how would change ever come about?First question: Why is it a throwaway society?
Second question: What constitutes something being a "throwaway" item - isn't everything?
Have you seen the figures on landfills? things are so cheap these days that they are just thrown away instead of being repaired. fridges, freezers and tvs in perfect working order appear on freecycle - no longer wanted because they aren't the latest model or don't fit with the colour scheme. and not all of these things end up being freecycled so think of the waste.

It's at the policy level that people should be first thinking, merely because it's at the policy level that policies are going to be thought of and implemented.
How are you going to bring in a policy that is successful without having thought in any great depth about it? This has been proven time and time again to a sufficient level as to have strayed into the obvious.
There is no substitute for sitting down and having a good old-fashioned think about it. Yes, I know it's hard, and it hurts for so many people - but there is literally no substitute.
Once that's done, then you go to the consultation phase. Not the "This is how it's going to be" phase, but the "What's wrong with this?" phase.skint_spice wrote: »Have you seen the figures on landfills?
How many carrier bags would it take to fill a landfill? Well 100,000 bags would stack to about 9 foot high. So it would take about 10,000,000 to fill my front room. Which is quite a few.skint_spice wrote: »things are so cheap these days that they are just thrown away instead of being repaired.
And why is that? Cost of time? Cost of energy?skint_spice wrote: »fridges, freezers and tvs in perfect working order appear on freecycle - no longer wanted because they aren't the latest model or don't fit with the colour scheme. and not all of these things end up being freecycled so think of the waste.
There will always be waste no matter how you do it. You have to try to minimise it *on average*, and kneejerk reactions about waste are not the way to do that. It requires deep thought - at a policy level...skint_spice wrote: »Anyhow I'll get off my high horse as I'm off to get ready for my evening of debauchery! have a good night all.

Unfortunately our local council seems to fail to ever get past this phase, we have had bins for garden waste, which were later removed and then recently replaced again. Have had kurb side boxes for glass/paper and cans, without a lid, then a lid was provided.
Recently we had a bright purple coloured bin bag in which we were to put cardboard and plastic to be put in with our household bin and seperated at the refuse site(yeah right)!
Now the purple bin bag has been replaced by a green sack for all paper/plastic and cardboard.
I just dont have the confidence that this refuse is actually being recycled and am suspicious that the council is just appearing to do the scheme in order to appear to meet government targets. But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.0 -
