I've successfully grown perpetual spinach this year and am really happy to have my own organic, iron rich greens.
OH however, although he recognises the 'goodness' factor of the spinach says he doesn't like the slimy texture of it when cooked. I generally rinse the leaves and stir fry them with just the moisture on the leaves. Sometimes I stir in yoghurt and herbs but although he loves the sauce he still doesn't like the spinach element :rolleyes:
Does anyone have an alternative recipe for cooking spinach which I can try out on other half? I'd like to double my crop next year but I don't think OH will tolerate eating twice of much of the way I cook it!

HI,
When I've grown it my sons were little, and couldn't face in en masse! So used to add a little in tomatoe based pasta sauces, mixed stir fries and mixed veg soups etc.. You can't do it all the time or add too much, but it does pad things out, so you do save a bit, and you do get the benefit of the vitamins.
Edit - Normal spinach I just steam in the steamer, and it vanishes with no problem. Perpetual seems to have a different texture though.0 -
How about making into a soup a la brocolli and stilton but using spinach instead? Or adding it to a cheesy souffle? Eat the baby leaves raw in salad. I love spinach!I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0

Good idea se999 - I have a cupboard full of tinned tomatoes which I haven't used as I had so much spinach in the garden! I'll try this - plus I could freeze some soups for lunch boxes.
Noozan - I try the souffle and soup ideas. Broccoli and stilton is already a favourite in our house so I shouldn't have any trouble substitutingEnjoying an MSE OS life0 -

Have to confess to being a bit like your OH - I cant stand slimey spinach. My DH is a nutrition and diet guru so likes to have only the very healthiest of foods ( I on the other hand am not quite so health concious) so we have spinach in the house all the time.
I stir it into HM thai style curries (made with coconut milk) just at the last second before i dish it up (and definately AFTER you take it OFF the heat) - then it maintains some of it's 'freshness'.
Other than that I love it raw in salads like everyone else says. It mixes well with all other leaves and takes dressings really nicely. We usually drizzle olive oil and cider vinegar over.
Not sure I've been any help there at all but had to add my two penneth worthI'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. Mrs B - your technique for cooking it may solve the problem. I'll try throwing the spinach into the mix after I've taken it off the heat. I'm sure OH will enjoy a crispier leaf - as I said, it's the texture that's the problem. I must admit I'm now getting loads of ideas from everyone so I think I'll be testing them out over the next few days. I'll probably run out of spinach!Enjoying an MSE OS life0

Just mix it into anything, use it in pasta sauces, chillis, curries, stews, soups. It'll shrink down so much that OH won't even notice it0
