oh im ashamed to post this cause you lot are so clever, but it may help someone! you can actually cook spinch by pouring a kettle full of boiling water over the leaves if you put them in the sink in a colander. Ill crawl back now with my tail between my legs... but i thought it was clever so i wanted to share!!!:o

    Lol!

I usually do my spinach/chard in a saucepan with a small amount of water, or stirfry it. You can also steam it. It doesn't take long by any method.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Well I didn't think of that either! But then I'm a bit of a newbie round here

i put it in a collander on top of a pan of, say, boiling potatoes. Same gas ring doing two jobs!!

  • I have been given a bag of spinach, unfortunately I detest  it cooked & served as a vegetable on it's own. I can eat it disguised in another dish though and as I'm loathe to waste it - does anyone know how I can use it?
As a last resort, I can always give it to DDs guinea pigs - they're not as fussy as me!
  • You could give it to me - we love it in our house. Try using it raw in sandwiches or salad instead of lettuce. Cooking will make it slimy which some people hate so use it raw.
  • How about making

    spinach lasagne.
1 onion and 8oz mushrooms fried in olive oil until soft and add a can of chopped tomatoes. Place in an ovenproof dish cover with a layer of lasagne sheets.
On top of this add 12oz of cottage cheese and place another layer of lasagne sheets on top. Gently wilt the spinach and season with nutmeg and cover the lasagne. Arrange grated cheese and sliced tomatoes on top.
Cook at 180c, 350F, Gas Mark 4 for 30 minutes.

    spinach risotto
14oz spinach leaves, 1 onion, 1 garlic clove, 1oz butter, 8oz arborio rice, 1 and 1/4 pints veg stock, grated parmesan.
Chop the spincach, peel and chop onion, peel and slice the garlic. Melt butter and add the onion and garlic and cook for 5 mins. Add the rice and stir for about 2-3 mins. Add half the stock and continue cooking until most of it has been absorbed, continue adding a little stock at a time until it is used up and the rice is tender. Stir in the spinach into the rice and heat through for a few mins until the spinach is wilted. Remove from the heat and stir in the parmesan.

    Enjoy

  • On a pizza with a soft cheese. Once it's cooked and chopped and the water drained out it won't seem like very much at all.
