  • Received my credit card statement today showing the charge to Shopper DIscount. Have been distracted recently so wasnt aggressive when I phoned but the woman's script was very "tight" - they must have had many, many complaints as she put the refund through whilst lecturing me. Original company I dealt with was All Posters.

I havent posted on this sort of thing before cos I thought I was always so smart - obviously totally deluded on that front - so be warned....
  • I first used Shopper Discount in April 2008, linked via Easyjet website to claim £10 cash back, and I did in fact get that cash back. However I didn't realise that I was signing up to a £8 monthly subscription service, and after one months 'free trial' I started to see £8 deducted each month through my bank statement. I do not remember giving my debit card details, but there is a ppssibility that I did. I don't believe that Easyjet, as a reputable business, would have given my details away, so I probably did give them my details. however, I almost certainly wouldn't have if I knew the costs which were clearly hidden in small print.

Today I pulled my finger out and acted. I spoke to my bank and they advised to speak to Shopper Discounts. I saw two options, which were (a) make use of the cash back on purchases which could get my money back through Xmas purchases etc, or (b) cancel my membership and do my best to get my subscription repaid. Buying and getting cash back seemed more hassle and risky so I chose to cancel my subscription. I called 08082341539, and after some waiting on hold, I was dealt with quite well. In the end I cancelled my membership and was promised three months repayment immediately, and I've been emailed a form which allows me to try to claim back older membership subscriptions, back to when I made my claim for cash back. At the end of the day I take responsibility for my own actions (as should anyone, especially for checking bank statements) since I did sign up for it and never cancelled it, so am not going to rant about them too much. However I do think that the ease by which I was able to get a refund (fingers crossed I actually get it) indicates they have done something they don't feel they should have done, or even wrong, and want to minimize damage.
  • I too found a £10 charge from Shopper Discounts on this months bill. I spoke to AMEX who said they had investigated them before. Having had this conversation I realised one of the ways they get you is via an offer to get money back - and as welshwoofs says above - it appears as though it is the same company (in my case Trainline.com...BEWARE). I'm usually very savvy and read the t&cs so this monthly charge can't have been obvious - and the speed with which you are issued a refund upon complaint (call Shop Dis on 08082341539) - infers they haven't got a leg to stand on. Can't trading standards or watchdog look into this? We've got better things to do with our precious time then eagle eyeing our statements and following up with unethical companies.
  • Below is a copy of the Email sent to me after my complaint about this scam all done without my knowledge.

Elogantly put, but when you think of the amount of people who are getting hoodwinked, compared to those getting refunds, so long as its allowed to carry on like this, they're literally "raking it in", and blatantly getting away with it on some "technicality". Trading Standards must at least have alarm bells ringing, they just seem to sit on theyre hands over the issue.

  • hi,

if we're naming and shaming, I've just been offered this service from PHOTOBOX

Personally I think the companies involved should be ashamed of themselves, it does look like a legitimate offer after you've just purchased.

Glad I googled them first. Can't even be bothered doing the free month, but will complain to Photobox about this

  • Hi, this is my first post on this forum.

In March this year I booked my wife on an EasyJet flight and must have clicked the button which said '£10 Off' your next flight or something similar. It's taken me until now (doh!) to notice they have been siphoning off £8 every month from my current account, without my permission. This is unreasonable and I believe unlawful (though possibly not illegal?) - I'm sure you know the difference.

I spoke to my bank, who I thought was responsible. They politely told me they suspected I had entered a contract unwittingly by clicking that EasyJey discount button. They gave me the number for Shopper Discount:
08082341539 (Would be surprised if this wasn't a premium rate number).

I spoke to 'Zee'. He put up no resistance and though I was polite and moderate in tone, I was very clear that: I was disgusted and found this affair quite disgraceful, that SD had taken £8 from me for 9 months without my permission. He offered me £24 immediate refund to my account and a claim form emailed to me to claim back the rest. I am time poor, so I accepted this interim settlement until I can claim it all back and naturally I canceled my SWITCH card too and canceled my 'Account ' with them.

It's clear they are getting hundreds of phone calls. I suggested 'Zee' get a job working for an honest company, not people exercising such deceit and dishonesty, he sounded embarrassed.

Perhaps someone needs to bring this to the attention of WATCHDOG on TV or another scam busting programme. Happy Christmas, one and all!
  • ahhhh I can't believe that I got caught by this. I am normally so sensible when it comes to stuff like this. However they have now put a cancellation button on their website, click here.

  • Apparently I signed up for shopper's discount when I bought national express tickets although I do not remember signing anything agreeing to pay £8 per month! Having read your page I phoned immediately and will be receiving my money back in the next 10 days. I was told I would be refunded the subscriptions paid in the last 3 months (luckily all of them in my case) so do not delay.
Lesson for today - Make time to check my bank account on a more frequent basis!!!
