I know most tins come with those 'ring-pull' lids now but for some reason the ones I use most (beans, spaghetti hoops and tomatoes) don't!!

I have 2 tin openers and they both drive me mad cos I can't open the tins with either of them - I just end up with a tiny hole which I then prise open and 'squish' the contents out!!

Can anyone recommend me a tin opener that won't break the bank but will open the tins?

Sorry, I don't think there is one... I gave up on cheap can openers a long time ago. Go for a magican one, they've been the most reliable I've had. I currently have an electric one, it's bliss :)

I can only ever get on with the cheap butterfly type tin openers, being left handed the other sort just leave me confused lol

I'd say that the cheap ones - are they called "butterfly" tin openers - are by far and away much better than any expensive one I've ever tried.

Thanks - I'll pop to the shops after work and try one of the butterfly ones - if that fails then I might have to invest in an electric one!!

When I was little I remember my nan had a tin opener that was fixed to the back of the pantry door - it was fantastic but I don't think you can get them anymore.

i have sainsbury's own brand one, which is rubberised butterfly style one, if that makes sense?!

we've had several quite expensive chrome effect ones, you know, that look nice in the kitchen, but they break really quickly!

Brabantia do one which is not cheap but the ones we've had have lasted for years. They work with a cutting disk on one side which penetrates the can, driven via a cog which connects with the handle.

This is the beast - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brabantia-Classic-White-Hand-Opener/dp/B0002HPJ0C/ref=sr_1_54?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1257416928&sr=1-54

Our one is at least ten years old and still working fine. OK so you might balk at the price but I would say its worth the money.

I have a Culinaire Magican and it's by far the best tin opener I've ever had. If ever it breaks (which is unlikely) it'll be replaced with an identical one.

This is it on ebay. I got mine in Sainsburys I think but you can pick them up everywhere.

Whichever you buy, sellotape the receipt to the packaging and keep handy in the kitchen drawer, ready for when you need to take it back for an exchange/refund!!
