Best tin opener

  • I recently had a very nasty and STUPID accident - it started with a cr*&&y normal tin-opener + value tin of toms. And ended with me trying to finish the job with a normal knife... _pale_

Of course I know that none of you sensible people would ever do that (and I still can't believe I did it myself)

The end of the story is that I went and bought a brabantia tin opener, which is just great. It's good on the value tins and cost 13 euros (so somewhere under a tenner)

It was my best Present!! ( how sad am I!!) I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so this is great - you just sit it on press the button and it does it all for you. I was fed up, of having to wait till DH get home to open tins, or asking neighbours to do it - this does just the job!!

Oooh I got RA too, and have been reading this thread with great interest. I might just invest in one of those, thanks.

The best one I've used is the culinare magican; it works everytime.

I've bought the cheaper ones before but they never last. I've had this one for ages. It is a bit dearer, though.

Culinare Magican gets my vote too. It is very easy to operate and opened-tin has not sharp edges so it is much safer.

Would like to try their One Touch but have heard it only works with round cans?

My best one was one of those that leaves no sharp edges at all! Meant the kids could open soup, etc if necessary. Think I must have accidentally thrown it away though as it seems to have disappeared.

I have a Brabantia one that opens tins easily, but leaves bits of label (and I worry about metal shavings) in the food, so I stopped using it.

Might try one of the magicans if they leave no sharp edges.

Thanks for the picture of the Magican, malamala. I was getting a bit confused with their One Touch automatic one. The One Touch sounds fun, but is a bit pricey for a tin opener - if you are able to use a manual one, of course.

    Update.

I found a Culinaire MagiCan in Woolies for £7.00. However, on the back it had a warning to avoid contact with the lip of the can. On closer inspection, it was obvious that it is one of those openeners that cut sideways into the thinner metal of the side of the can. This leaves the potentially dangerous sharp edge all around the top of the can.

Personally, I think I'll stick with one of the traditional ones that cut down into the lid. This leaves the rounded edge around the top of the can. The lid still has a sharp edge to beware of, but this fits down into the can for disposal.

  • I have vowed never to use a can opener again! I now buy only ring pull cans.

Why not try an electric one not really o/s but the best I have ever used thet cost around £6 in Asda/Argos , brillant for me with weak hands.

This is what we've got, had it two years now and works fine for us and we only have "value" cans :o
