Best tin opener

There now seem to be two basic types.
The old one, which I am familiar with, cuts down into the lid. This leaves a safe rounded edge around the top of the tin and a sharp edge around the lid. However, the lid fits into the can for recycling, etc.
However, I have noticed a new type, which cuts sideways into the top of the can. This leaves a sharp edge around the top of the can and a rounded edge around the lid. If you want to try and put the lid into the can, you have to bend it into an oval shape, and you still have the sharp edge around the top of the can. What, if anything, is the advantage of this?

I think the main advantage to no2, is that you don't have to dig into the can to remove the lid. With no1, sometimes the lid would be stuck on the can,if you didn't completely open it, then you would cut your fingers trying to get the lid up.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0

Our one is a version of No 1 except that it works with a circular blade that is rotated as you turn the handle (which also turns the tin). Brabantia were the first to bring them out but others make them the same. I've had it since I bought my own house 9 years ago and its still cutting fine. The normal cheapo ones seem to stop working after a while but this keeps going - my parents have one which is probably 20 years old!
I think the idea with the other ones is that often the cut off lid remains held within the opener after its finished so you don't have to touch it.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
I use a magnet - there are a few always on my fridge - to remove the lids from inside the cans.:beer:0

I have both model No1 & No2 both do a great job and neither leave a sharp edgeLife's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

Not sure how to describe our one. You open up the two arms, place on top of can, close arms to engage with top of can and then turn nut thing on the top until it has rotated around the can. You are left with your open can on one side and the opener with the lid attached in your hand! No sharp edges.

they're not really cheap, but mine is pretty well used, and is the best tin opener i've ever used.

Hi, Can anyone recomend a decent tin opener? I've tried loads over the years from expensive to cheap and they all let me down eventually. I think the problem is that I use value tomatoes, beans ect and they just can't open these tins properly, while having no problem with higher cost brands. any suggestions grateful.”Pour yourself a drink, (tea for me now)
