I have a couple of thermal bento jars - which are basically food flasks with extra containers. There's a whole Flickr group (search Google for "flickr mr bento" and don't be put off by the group's name:rotfl: ) which I search for inspiration to see what everyone else has put in their thermal jar.
What did you have to post that for!!! I've just spent ages looking at bento lunches, boxes, jars
So where do you get a bento jar, cheap in UK?working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -

Sorry! It's totally addictive:D
I'm afraid I bought one off e bay when the £ wasn't quite so weak as it is now and another one when I was in Hong Kong last year. I think that Lakeland do have the big Mr Bento but it's not cheap - I think they wanted £40 for it:eek: In their defence the Zojirushi ones (they make Mr Bento) are excellent quality - they feel like they are made of tank-grade steel.
E bay is probably still the best place at the moment.0 -
Well I bought a thermos one in my local hardware store this afternoon, looks exactly the same as the kidz one that £12ish but it's silver and only cost £3.99!
It's keeping beans warm in the kitchen at the moment. I put them in at 4pm so will check at about 8.30 (as that's about the amount of time it will need to keep my son's lunch warm for), will report back!xxx Nikki xxx0 -
Could you report back whether it actually works, please? I have bought 2 (one of them a Stanley, other indeterminate brand) and if I fill them at 8am they are stone cold by 11am. I am loathe to throw another £12 after a Thermos one and have that not work either.
I bought a thermos food flask in asda (I think it cost about £5) and my son uses it a lot in the winter for hot lunches. He leaves the house at 7.15am to go to school and has lunch at 12.45pm and says the food is still hot. He says that his friends think his mum is great for giving him hot lunches, but the reality is I'm just using up leftovers.

We had vegetable stew last night and that was yummy in the flask today. Make sure to fill the flask with boiling water first for five minutes and then pour it away before putting your lunch in. It stays hotter for longer0

I chucked a pack of cheapo dried curry noodles into a Stanley food flask and poured hot water in. No pre-cooking, I figured it'd do its own. So that was easy. I then left it on the side for 5 hours and ate it, it was edible.
If you plan to do this seriously, it might be worthwhile looking for a piece of thermal cloth, especially if you can get some aluminium covered cloth, and wrap the thermos in it to further reduce heat loss.
You can put in jacket potatoes - just slice them up a bit and pour the topping either on the top, or layer it. Potato/cheese, potato/beans, potato/chilli. Keep an eye out for those big tins of All Day Breakfast to get ideas ... e.g. meatballs/beans.0 -
Success(ish) - forgot all about it so we were about 20 minutes later than it would normally have to last iyswim and whilst it wasn't piping hot DS ate the beans quite happily saying they were 'just right'!
So tomorrow is the first day of using it for real - the test will be how much food comes back in the flask!!xxx Nikki xxx0 -
Hi
i got a food flask for OH at the weekend so he can take hot food as a change from sandwiches.
It is a Stanley one that you microwave with the food in it.....did some soup on Tues but when he came to eat it it was almost cold:rolleyes:
Anyone have any tips on how to keep it hot or another flask to recommend?
Am having a browse on net in a moment to see if there are any others which may work better
ta very muchly:D0 -
The best flask is a vacuum food flask.
I cannot see how you would be able to microwave a vacuum flask.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
I've never heard of a flask you can microwave, are you sure this was correct? Stanley flasks are generally very good, so if you did things right, perhaps it's a faulty flask. Still got your receipt?0
