There are provisions to reimburse anyone injured by an uninsured and penniless driver.

There was no speeding involved in this case.

Apart from a fine, he could have got points on his licence, but (much worse), got disqualified.

The maximum penalties for motor offences are set out, so we do know the consequences.

After just 10 days of getting my first car, I ran a red light. There was a police car waiting round the corner and I ended up getting a fine and 3 points. I have learnt my lesson, but am surprised at this outcome. Well, I shouldnt be really. The system is just stupid. Its all the same with the justice system. If this idiot had hit somebody then the victim wouldnt have seen a penny for repairs or damages. I dont condone speeding, but punishment should be set out and so we all know the consequences from the outset.

No, just unaware of the MIB and their role in the insurance sector.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Ignorance of insurance is the norm.

Hey, I am quite confused, why some of you would rather take 6 points and £200 fine? If i had gone with that, then that would have ment i would get the points, loose my licence as i am on my first year. I am quite happy with the 7 day ban, atleast i get to keep my licence with no points or anything.
If you had a choice, being in my position, would you take the 1 week disqualification and after you can keep your licence or would u take the 6 points knowing you've lost your licence. the lady at court actually gave me the option.

By the way, where is Sue? Havent heard from her?

    Why is disqualified much worse?

Hiya James! I've not been well but am back now and really pleased to see it's all over for you at last. I think, that as others have said, you've learned a very valuable lesson from all this and will think hard before you act in future ....in fact I'm positive you will. Just don't ever be tempted (not for one second) not to mention the ban when filling your Ins form out as it'll cost you so dearly IF you do.

As cyclonebri1 says: I'd also like to commend you on the way you have presented yourself on this thread, a very sensible young man indeed and I bet that's just the way you were in court. Well done James, your parents too!

You look after yourself James and always keep safe on the roads! All the very best.:D

Hope you're feeling better now, Thank you sue for everything, you were here from the begining til the end, and i just want to Thank you. I really appreciate it. At court, i was sensible, kinda had to beg for my licence and showed them my sympath, maybe thats why they gave me a 7 day ban and not points. I have my own car, so i wont think about driving others.

You take care of your self, if there is anything you need, do not hesitate to ask.

By the sound of it - searching you, your friend and the vehicle, having back-up arrive etc - they were looking for a similar vehicle for something far more serious and related to crime rather than speeding.
Having satisfied themselves that you were not the people they were after and believing your account of what happened they exercised their discretion and dealt with your relatively minor offence by way of a warning to you and your friend.
If that isn't the case I can't understand why they wouldn't have issued you and your friend [permitting uninsured driver] with fixed penalty notices and/or HORT1s to produce all documents.
As they didn't do that or caution you and tell you you were being reported for the offences then I think you can rest easy, but as said before - learn a lesson from this.

    I agree with this post,,

and i dont think you will hear anythin more,in my younger days ive been stopped many many times ive had points.from my experiance you have been very lucky..

my friend put his car on the drive after having a drink,,stupid he was 19 at the time and a plod was drining past,,a just stopped..cut it short he got a DD ban..point is you would think it could happen just putting it on the drive,,or just driving it 10 feet forward..it does so learn from this
    Dony worry,be happy...
