    I guess on every current account, you should set up an overdraft facility, no matter if you intend to use it or not.

    For what it's worth though I've certainly seen a credit listed for my account with no debits before it on that day, but then logging in the following day debits have been inserted before the credit - the only answer seems to be to allow an extra 24 hours after seeing the credit appear before doing anything with that money.

    I invariably set up an overdraft facility "just in case". Also check the amount of overdraft facility and increase it, if permitted, "just in case".
    Similarly, I operate a d/d for minimum payment to c/c's, "just in case"

    According to the front page of my cheque book it's 72 50 0 plus the first digit of your nine-digit account number. The account number then becomes the remaining eight digits of the nine-digit account number.

    Many sensible comments above re "debit before credit".

    @ceebee - just because something doesn't seem logical to you doesn't make it "illegal". It doesn't serve your purpose very well during the course of a complaint to over-react with words like that. If a building society wants to insist you allow 7 days for a deposit to clear, before you can spend the money (as many do), it's completely within its rights. So for a bank (A&L) or building society (Nationwide) to insist that you have cleared funds available at close of business one banking day before making a payment is completely legal and up to them.

    If Nationwide don't include the appropriate wording in their Ts & Cs, I can see why they refunded the charges. But A&L do have that appropriate wording in the Ts & Cs and there's no reason why they should refund the charges in similar cases.

    Hence why I constantly recommend that people have as large an approved overdraft limit as they can, with any bank but particularly A&L, as this avoids the issue arising unless you make HUGE payments on the same day as funds arrive in your account. This is a no cost solution to the "problem".
