Possibly - they refused my girlfriend and me when we'd just moved house but accepted us a few months later.

The debits-before-credits thing has caught me out before as well, although I did get them to refund the charge.

  • I'm going to my local branch on Friday to try and get it back. I'll put up a good fight believe me...

We have 2 current accounts, 4 savings accounts and are taking out a mortgage with them... they will lose them all if they don't give me the £50 back... It was partially their fault as the online transfer system was down for a week so I could move funds around in time... I called customer services and the woman was useless and I think complained to her manager after so she wrote a letter to me saying the charges were correct... B*LLS...

Has anyone who's referred a new customer had their payment yet? Does it say which new account number it refers to?

I don't think so. I've been in this country just over 2 years and had moved 3 times, but got A&L account opened online.

PS: My application to halifax was unsuccessful, as my rating was not enough for them

    Hi,
Anybody know if this £50 from A&L stands for introducing the wife to open a Premier Plus account?

Seems like it should be okay, as long as she's 21 or over - it's open to friends and family.

(PS sorry about the rant but A+L have annoyed me! - they put my debit before my credit and I went over my limit by £30 and they charged my £25 TWICE for paid item charges!!! - needless to say that as they won't remove these charges I'll be waving bye to them ASAP...)
Not sure that I understand your throwaway comment here, Simon, and can't find another post where you detail what went wrong here.
they put my debit before my credit
As the balance has to be there by close of business the previous day, in order to meet any debit, it doesn't matter which way round the transactions are posted on a particular day. And the Ts & Cs say that you can't rely on the order of transactions on a particular day.

Not sure why you'd get two paid item charges unless you breached the principle above twice (meaning two transactions, not two different occasions).

If you cancel your mortgage application, after paying valuation fees, a product switchover fee, etc. all over £50 then you are not being very logical, I'm afraid.

Re Debit before Credit (Simon) Thought you might be interested in a letter I had from N/wide some time ago, the gist of which was :-
"On investigation,I have found that several transactions were processed on the same day
which momentarily took your account overdrawn.
As your account is otherwise in credit, I have assumed that the order of the transactions has created the interest charge. I have of course arranged for the interest charge to be refunded and have passed the issue to our head office in order that our technology team can try to ensure that this does not happen again."
During the course of the correspondence, I did suggest that they were creating 'virtual overdrafts' and that their monetary manipulations, resulting in overdraft charges, were illegal.
It does raise an interesting point, in that I wonder how much money are the financial institutions raking in simply by the process of "Debit before Credit"
They who ride tigers cannot dismount at will.
