No. You where not committing any offence, the tv was off, so not being used.
    .

Wouldn't be so sure of that ! depends what was said during the visit.
Common tactic is to be "nice and friendly", and ask you to "buy a Licence" and "don't do it again" - then you get a summons because by agreeing to this you have "admitted" your guilt.

Much as I dislike TVL, I dislike people who sponge off the rest of us by not buying a Licence even more - parasites ! Have a nice day in Court.

    This explains 0300 numbers

    :T

Thank you for the information. I am going to send this link to the Vodafone forum right now and ask them why they have charged me to call an 0300 number. I will get back on here as soon as they reply. I might even apologise to the BBC if the fault truly lies with Vodafone (although I still think the TV licence is an unfair stealth tax and should be changed to pay-to-view)! :o
  • I have just phoned Vodafone At Home (191 from my mobile - on hold for 16 minutes, but not too bothered because it was a free call - at least I think it was). Turns out that it is not the BBC's fault that I had been charged for the 0300 number (so now I will have to apologise to them for the snotty email I sent). :o

The chap at VAH informed me that the reason I had been charged was because BT had charged VAH (sounds like 'buck passing' to me?) He is going to ring me back on Tuesday and I will then let OFCOM know who the real culprit is. My charges of £1.36 have been refunded to my VAH account, but what about all the other punters who have been ripped off by either VAH or BT? It stinks that these big companies are able to get away with unscrupulously ripping us off in this way. It is a good job that forums like this exist to enable the man in the street to fight back! :grouphug:

Thanks to mjm3346 for the advice. :A
  • BTW, :grouphug: was listed on the Smiles menu as a group hug, not a threesome, just in case anybody gets the wrong idea. :rotfl:
  • I have now apologised to the BBC via email, but this incident has reminded me of the great Vodafone rip-off which took place a few months back! I have suggested to BBC Watchdog that they might want to investigate:

"Another thing which might well be worthy of an investigation [by Watchdog] is the decision by Vodafone to change the billing dates of all their customers in April of this year (without letting the customers know beforehand). At that time, Vodafone refunded £25.86 + VAT to me.

The point is, how many people didn't get refunded. What if Vodafone had 100,000 customers and only 10% noticed (90,000 x £25.86 = £2,327,400.00). Makes me wonder?"

Wouldn't it be great if Vodafone had to cough up?! :j

Don't they say that there are now more mobile phones than people in the country?
OK a lot of those are lying dead in a drawer somewhere and many are PAYG but I would thing that Vodaphone has considerably more than 100,000 contract customers, in a nation of 60,000,000?

Indeed sir you may be correct. I couldn't find an exact figure for the Vodafone UK Customer Base, but according to this article dated 24 Jul 2009, http: // www . mobiletoday . co . uk / mobile_exec/news.aspx?id=60138 "The operator [Vodafone] lost 159,000 customers during the quarter ended June 30 [2009], leaving it with a total customer base of 18.5 million, 57% of which are prepay".

I am not sure if that's just in the UK though, but if it is, that means 10,545,000 (less say 10% who complained would leave 9,490,500 who might have been overcharged!). That is SERIOUS money!!! but what can we do about it?
  • That's potentially an overcharge by Vodafone of £245,424,330.00 Sheesh!

Do you think perhaps Martin would be able to investigate this if we asked him to?

Be careful if you are telephoning the BBC on an 0300 numbers....

Now try telephoning the real tax man (Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs) to try and chase up your refund. You pay them for the call.
You more than likely get cut off by a message that says the call centre is open from 08:00 - 20:00 and we are having a high volume of calls and then cuts you off.

When you eventually get through you are told someone will call you back.

Even when you sort out their systems for them and ask "When will I get the cheque" your are told 28+ days.

I once got a letter of apology from the TV Licensing people - I've not had as much as an acknowledgement from HMRC.
