  • Thanks for the reply, Volcano. BTW, the link has changed slightly and they have added an interesting little extra:

"...you may be entitled to a refund. This is as long as you don’t need your TV Licence again before it expires."

As I return to the UK twice a year that would seem to rule me out of applying for a refund. Anyway, I've sent them a nice letter explaining that I have moved to Thailand and am not living in or renting out my UK property, so I no longer need a licence.
  • Although I can understand the TV licensing's way of paying by monthly DD, it's somewhat frustrating.

Having bought my first house and thus needing my first TV licence, I've gone onto the TV licensing website to set this up, only to discover that if I pay monthly by DD, I'll have to pay £28.50 for 5 months and then £11.xx per month thereafter.

Having read Martin's advice of NOT paying quarterly I'm slightly inclined to disagree in my situation. I have a new house, money is tight right now and so the prospect of paying £28.50 a month for the next 5 months is enough to put me off paying a TV licence (not watching illegally, I mean...not watching at all). It actually feels like I'll forever be in TVL's pocket for the overpayments until I either A) Stop paying for a TV licence and obtain a refund, or B) Die - then who is going to claim it back?!

So for me, the best option is to pay £36 every 3 months and pay the additional 42p every month, at least for the short term. That way I put £12 into an account every month from now onwarads that'll come out on the 3rd month.

If anyone can put a bloomin' good explanation as to paying £28.50 for 5 months from the off, it's be much appreciated as right now I can't see any benefit in my situation :)

I expect TVLA have a form you would need to sign to confirm that you are dead :rotfl:

Set up the DD, let 5 payments come out, then cancel the DD. Set it up again 7 months later.

TVL dont like this and say "that's not the way it works" i.e, they want your money in advance, but YOU control the DD.

    I do this.

    Thanks for that advice :)
Will that mean that in March next year I'll start again paying £28.50 for 5 months?

    Hi all,

i've recently bought a house, not living in it yet as i'm doing it up, and i've had a number of tv licence letters through the door

i'm not worried, because i've not used a tv, nor to i have any signal receiving equipment in the house.

My problem is, that i rang them to advise this would be the case, and they accepted no problem etc, not i've had two letters threatening to come view my property

is there anthing i should be concerned about?

I really wouldn't be too worried...I was living in my house for 3 months without licence (same situation as you, with no TV equipment in the property, and informed them via telephone.) It's just to put the frighteners on people who are receiving without licence. There might be an inspector turn up out of the blue, or a van be parked outside to monitor, but if you're doing nothing wrong, it's their time and money they're wasting in letters/callers/vans :)

I did think that, but I pay my licence fee for the broadcasts, they can spend the extras on whatever they want. But true, if they didn't spend so much on chasing non-payers, we'd all (probably) pay less.
