people ask how do the BBC iplayer know if you are using their services, I recently had to give them my name and email address. Now every time I use it I have to login.
The web site asks for a name and email address. Pick a name (e.g. B Johnson), and set up a one-time email address. The TVL data matching would have a hard time tying it to you personally.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -
How is it then that I can use Iplayer without being asked any details?0

There are possible legitimate reasons for doing this, however people should not be using iPlayer without a valid Licence.0 -

I don't use iPlayer, so I don't know which platforms require a login and which don't. It was introduced gradually across various platforms, though, suggesting that it depends on the app that provides the user interface.
Even where it is required, it is (supposed to be) set up so that you only have to enter details once. Other TV player apps are similar.0 -
Even to use the radio version of iPlayer (aka BBC Sounds) you have to log in so need to provide an email address.
Any old rubbish made up email will do of course.Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid0 -

LG Smart TV wired to my router.
When I select something to play I just get a pop-up with two options - "I have a TV Licence. Watch now." or "I don't have a TV Licence.", and I have to click on one of those (or simply exit out of the app).
NowTV Stick plugged into my TV
I have to sign in with a BBC account before I can even see what I could opt to watch. I actually have an account, as I set it up so I can access iPlayer via a NowTV stick or Firestick when I'm on holiday in a licenced property. Even there I haven't used it for anything more than a quick look around to see how it works though.Cheryl0 -
I live abroad for between 4 and 6 months a year.
In the last two years (2017 & 2018) I tried to recover the full months that I was away. On both occasions I was refused a rebate because I was due to return to the UK less than one month before my licence was due to run out and would therefore require a licence for that period!
Surely I should have been given a rebate and then I would have bought a new one year licence on my return, back dated to the beginning of the month in which I returned,
Since I informed TV licencing on the 4th. December 2018 that I would be away and I required a rebate they have sent several threatening letters to "The Occupier" claiming that the premises were unlicensed even though they refused a rebate of the licence which ran out on the 31st. May 2019! They are now threatening me with an "Enforcement Officer" visit on the 17th. July with the possibility of a £1,000 fine. THEY WILL NOT GAIN ENTRY TO MY PROPERY I CAN ASSURE YOU.0
