As posted above by CW18, there are some important limitations to the B&W Licence. Apart from the TV itself being a B&W set, you are permitted to add a standard, non-recording set-top box for Freeview or Satellite.
There is no provision for recording in colour. Full stop.0 -
Agreed. My concern is that they're telling people they don't need a licence when they do ('you only need if you're watching BBC' cropping up very regularly).
I think it's good to keep the info on MSE nice and accurate, but the wider Internet seems like a bit of an uphill struggle.
FWIW, I think that there is deliberate misinformation from certain people of the far Right and Freeman on the Land persuasion, as well as TV Licensing themselves struggling to create communications that are completely accurate and easy to understand.0 -
If you have any equipment in the property that's connected such that it could be used to watch live TV, my personal recommendation would be to disconnect it (remove the cable to the external aerial) and detune the TV and any receiver/recorder boxes. But no, if there's no-one using the property and watching live TV or iPlayer whilst there and you don't have anything set to record any shows, you don't need a licence.
Thanks. I don't think I'm going to go as far as you've suggested as I've not been home since 05 March and live 100 miles away, however I really appreciate your reassurances.
It sticks in my gall to phone the agency to tell them but I suppose I should otherwise the letters will continue and that would annoy me much more!0 -

Query: I am 75 in May 2020. Do I get a free tv licence for 1 month? Despite being on an income well below national average etc. I don't get pension credit. My wife was also robbed of her full State Pension by being born in the early 50s. The government has succeeded in hitting us financially at every opportunity - this tv licence is just the latest government scam.
totally agree and free bus passes will be cut next!0 -

yes an awful brutal company who send me about 5 rude letters a week demanding I buy a licence or they will take me to court and I haven't had a tV for decades!! Why is this allowed??0 -
