I've just bought my first home and received my first letter from TV Licensing this week ("Whatever you're watching, However you're watching it, Your home needs a TV Licence").
I don't watch broadcast television, only on demand services. I'd like to avoid getting any more letters from them and I will not entertain any visits from them as I am not a customer of theirs. What is the best way to do this? Do they continue to bother you after completing the opt-out at tvlicensing.co.uk/notv ?
The wording of their first ever letter to me made me quite angry about the whole thing.0 -
I just went to their website and ticked the relevant boxes as to why I don't need. Never had any contact from them other than confirmation they've received my notification as to why I don't need, or that they've been told I've bought some equipment but they can't find a licence (which just means I have to redo the previous step).Cheryl0

By all means complete their on-line form. In some cases this appears to do absolutely nothing, in others it stops the letters for (up to) 2 years.
There are various legal measures you can take which have a similar effect. And you can also make an official complaint - which tends to have the same effect.0 -
Thanks for the helpful answers. We should all be aware of what exactly Capita and TVL are capable of, and how we communicate effectively with companies who can bully and twist the laws to suit themselves.
I read from some that any communication on-line or by letter is futile to cease the barrage of threats and accusations, but I'm open to suggestions.
So far I've communicated on-line my non-functioning TV, and the fact I am stopping my DD, and had an answer of - 'please let us know if we owe you a refund.' But I'm suspicious, they're being too nice.:coffee:0 -

When I cancelled I used an on-line form to do so, and it automatically calculated (and issued) my refund. But note that they only refund for full quarters, so as we're about to change month it's important you do it today and not tomorrow (the delay could cost you 3 months licence fee!). I was all set to cancel part way through an October, but they'd still have charged me until the end of December. So I waited and cancelled on New Years Eve (leaving my aerial intact so I could still watch until then),
I've had no problems with them at all, despite buying more equipment and having to resubmit the declaration 3 times within the first 2 years.Cheryl0 -
I did it by using their on-line email system and as I was paying DD monthly, the quarterly mistake shouldn't effect me.
I'll let you all know if I get the threatening letters, and 'Septic Knuckles' at the door. But although I have nothing to worry about now having no functioning TV, I still will not be answering the door, as I'm deaf as a concrete post.
Plus I would not trust them to enter, as I have a PC that is capable of live broadcasting, no matter that I never use it. I believe if they had access, they might lie, the naughty little !!!!!!s!:coffee:0 -

When you first set up to pay by DD, you pay for the first licence over 6 months. You then pay for future licences 6 months in advance and 6 in arrears, so as it kicks in you've already paid for half of it - and you've paid in full by half way through it's life.
So if your licence renews on 1st Jan you've already paid half by then and will finish paying for it with your June payment. So if you cancel today you've paid for 8 months, used 2, and will be charged for 3 - meaning you're due a refund of 5 months payments.Cheryl0 -
Thanks for that. In that case I will get back to them for my refund, and tell them never to darken my doorstep again!:coffee:0

I wouldn't use a standard Withdrawal of Implied Right of Access though.
If you do want to use a legal measure, use WOIRA against Capita plc only.0 -
I would be interested in the actual best legal route to take to ensure peace, so can you give more details/links please?:coffee:0
