Just out of question though. Why are people entitled to council houses? Where does this entitlement start or come from? Im sure there must be a law stating you can get a council house or something?

Yes, you can find it on the Shelter website - there are certain people who are considered vunerable and have a need for housing, these people have to be housed by local athorities. This is why certain people think having a baby guarentees them having a house/flat. This i not always the case as you can see from many threads on these forums but there seem to be some who are able to twist the system to their advantage.

The refurbs are done by the council as and when they are needed - houses built in 1945 arund here have only JUST been refurbed, if you had the money you could by all means do it yourself (I beleive you have to ask permission hough) but people living in council accomodation are unlikely to have the money to do it themselves.

Neas, I am sure it looks unfair but you pointed out on another thread that you did not want to live on the wrong side of town and wanted to live somewhere nice. You are 'lucky' and have that 'choice' - it is yours to make, council tenants get put into one house and unlss they are able to transfer they stay there for life, be it the good or bad part of town. However, people who are desperate can;t complain - a roof is a roof, wherever it is so cannot move unlss their circumstances improve. I guess you have a choice, get yourself into the situation of having no other options, spendall your money, get your gf pregnant and then not be able to afford somewhere to live and go to the council nd you might get sucky and get housed somewhere you woul love to live for next to nothing. Or, you might get stuck on the wrong side of town and there is nothing you can do about it. Who do you think is 'lucky'? I conder myself thankful for having a place to turn so we can have a roof over our heads. Lucky? As me gain in a few months time when we are allocated a place we cannot refuse - if we do then we make ourselves homeless and the council have no obligation to house us then. That will then be the place we stay forever, no choices, no looking, no checking that the garden/lounge/kitchen/bathroom is big enough or suitable. As I said, I am thankful we have a place to turn or I really do not know what else we could do or where we could go.

Come back to this forum in a years time and then see who else is in the same boat as us.

Im not bothered about genuine people who need housing. But theres a generation of young teenage girls either not being educated correctly... or just stupidly getting pregnant and then expecting the nation to foot the bill for their child. Its not 1900s we got contraception these days :).

I heard other day an argentina girl was having her 7th baby... at 17 or something (2 twins 1 triple set). the entire nation was a bit !!!!ed off that she doesn't seem to understand contraception and that because of her naivety other people were paying for her baby.

It is a little upside down that evolution is taking place a little wrongly. People getting on housing market sensible... going to school doing a levels , getting debt, cant get on housng market for years... so wait till they are 30 or dont even bother with kids...Whereas a 13 year old girl can produce offsrpring to further evolution. Is this darwin gone wrong? :P
  • Unfortunately neas these are often the uneducated "lifes a soap opera" generation and I hate to stereotype but often their parents were the same and their children will be too and so it continues. Working in an inner-city secondary school I saw lots of this, but lots of good people and kids too - thats what keeps my heart strong! If only we could work out the answer, but we seem to have an expanding generation who are work shy and benefit greedy.

Does anyone out there know whether we are entitled to a bigger
    council place?
2 adults, my daughter who is 12, and partners 8 year old son
that stays every other weekend. (9 this year)

We live in a 2 bed council flat, his son sleeps on settee in front room
    when he stays.

Are we entitled to a 3 bed?

Thanks ahead for any help, and how do you get a HA place?
    What is the difference?

We both work, me part time, him full time £17.000 a year between us.

sorry if already answered just thought get my 2pence in before trawling through the entire replies

it all depends on how the council assess your needs. where i live my friend was in a 2 bed terrace housing association place, she had another girl and they told her she would need to wait until 1st child was 10 yrs old before being eligible for a bigger property. she moved and now rents privately and the council pay the difference. the council should have went with the cheaper option

myself i have 2 boys and not eligible for a council place or a bigger place unless i continue the extortionate private renting that i currently do. occasionally there are the odd few 2 beds i am eligible for but always end up number 200 etc on the list.

i would jump at the chance to be on the property ladder, but sometimes you just cant win. my rent is equivalent to some peoples mortgage

sorry i have rambled but you should be able to add your step son to your housing list and state he stays at weekends and hols. council housing registers do have to take it into consideration

    good luck

Yep agree with the above posts!

I hate hearing about council dwellers wanting bigger houses just cos they need to share rooms. Us other folk have to work our butts off to be able to afford bigger houses and i think everyone should have to do the same!

i would love to become a council dweller
pay cheaper rent, save the difference from what these landlords charge
get a nice deposit get on the property ladder

i would rather be a council dweller than a privately renting tennant

not everyone can get a mortgage but if you could get a mortage for working council dwellers by all means do and dont slag people off just because your a homeowner.

    affordable housing
councils are no longer the only ones renting
there seems to be more housing association homes then council homes

council housing is not an entitlement, never has been. its all based on eligibility. anyone can apply for a council home, its whether or not you have enough eligibilty criteria to get one. if your privately renting your basically screwed because the council will not want to house you. even more screwed when all the housing associations in your area ONLY RENT VIA THE COUNCIL LIST. so if the council wont neither will any of the social landlords, unless of course you rent private and get kicked out end up in a hostel for a 1-2 yrs with children then you become eligible for a council home. have seen this happen and its a regular occurence.

p.s. thats regardless if your paying your way like may do or signing your name fortnightly

it doesnt work like that. what year/decade are you living in.
i know for london and parts of east midlands that is not the case.
have friends in london who are in hostels with children pending husing allocation from the council.

have friends in east midlands stuck in one bed flat and with a 2yr old

i wish it was that easy to get a place i would just pop em out cos child birth dont last long for me lol
