Some areas in the south are cheaper than some areas in the north.
Some areas in the south:-
Chatham http://www.rightmove.co.uk/action/publicsite.PropertySearch
Gravsend http://www.rightmove.co.uk/action/publicsite.PropertySearch
An area in East Yorkshire:-

Salaries for skilled workers are generally lower in the north.
What about a married couple who have no children or fetility issues & have no children.
What about them?0 -
Alot of mothers these days have to work to just support their family, while amother in a council house can enjoy special first years with her child. She can achieve this while the working mum, earning money and paying her way cannot. I know plenty of parents in council accommodation who do go out to work! You make it sound like people in council accommodation have such easy lives compared to homeowners/people who rent privately!:mad:0

I think very few mums can have the luxury of being a SAHM these days.
Those on benefits & those with rich husbands, those at the bottom & those at the top.
The rest of us in the middle just struggle on.0 -
We really need to get away from this whole council housing is a gift/charity/benefit thing.
Housing benefit is a benefit, having a council house is a non profit making rental. So no landlord is raking it in, but the tenants are paying their share.
I think it is really rude to keep insisting that people in council houses or housing !!! houses are living off tax payers.
People on housing benefits are getting tax payers money, but people who pay their rent are not getting subsidised.
Hear hear! I get the impression that some people on this forum think that all council property occupants are either Vicky Pollard or have an ASBO. And all homeowners/people who rent privately are saints :mad:0 -

As the housing market is no longer on the up and the easy credit has dried up how do you propose these people on a low salary save up the deposit needed to buy a property? In Progress!!!0 -

I didn't realise though that it is the local council who state the criteria for who gets housed and that some say you have to have lived in an area for a certain amount of time. What happens if your area get a family who are new to the area, but who have nowhere to live?
No they don't - they currently have LESS entitlements if from EU ascension countries (eastern european).....0 -

Apart from that those two towns that have been quoted as cheap are probably the worse places in the south to need to work, there is probably more unemployment there than anywhere.
Of course now the easy credit has gone, the days of the 100% mortgage are gone.
People will need 5% & 10% deposits. Of the house is 250k, thats a deposit of 12.5K, fairly big deposit for those on a low wage.
Also while they are trying to save this to get on the ladder, I'm guessing they will be paying an inflated rent to a private landlord:rolleyes: How will they ever save this much?0 -

Sorry I have to pop out and was reading quickly so not sure if it has been answered. A friend of mine had a relative who wanted to move to the area. she went to the council and told them that she wanted to move here as her sister was here and she had nowhere to go as she had left her huband back in another county. They told her she would have to go back to tat county ad apply to them for housing as she would have to live in the area for 12 months so they could qualify to go on the register here and that they could not help her if she dd not rent privately.
Seems harsh I guess but then everyone would just keep on moving from county to county to see who will house them and that is then unfair on people who have lived in that area - I have been here for most of my 36 years - but I left for about 6 years to get away from a violent relationship and moving 100 miles was the only way to get rid of him (he still found me when I got back though!! Tw*t!).
I don;t know, things are going to change rapidly soon, more in our situation. It is scary.0
