My best secondhand buy is my dog (if that counts). We love him to bits and he's sooooo spoilt!
If dogs don't go to heaven, then I want to go where they go. :A

I once bought a Dyson vacuum cleaner from a jumble sale for £5 in 2004. All blocked up with fluff so I took it apart and gave it a good clean, having downloaded the correct brochure for the model from the Dyson website. It's still going strong!

The prettiest thing I ever bought was an immaculate, handmade late 50s/early 60s cotton dress in the most beautiful green, black and turquoise floral print. It's such a lovely dress and I'm complimented on it whenever I wear it. It cost me just 50p from a jumble sale in Kingston and was one of about 20 good vintage items I bought there.

Last weekend's jumbling yielded a pair of late 70s/early 80s Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche black velvet pantaloons for 40p!

I do love a good jumble! It's a bit sad, I know but I still get quite excited when I see the jumble sale adverts in the local papers on a Friday!

JenHen - I get very excited by jumble sales too, and I can't pass a charity shop without going in and spending ages in there. :)

My mother in law bought a silver pin cushion at a jumble sale a couple of years ago. She found it again in a cupboard a couple of months back and asked me to ebay it fo her - it raised £265

I LOVE jumble sales and charity shops - and I work for a chain of charity shops too, I have the best job in the world!
Not been here in years! Hi everyone. Make £10 a day challenge = £78.45/155

Loads of stuff! Can't even remember half of it, but here's some highlights ..

Two Franco Maria Ricci limited edition luxury books, for £15 each from a second-hand bookshop that really should have known better ... they're worth about £300 apiece :D

Similarly, a very rare Megadrive game, worth about £300-£400 that I picked up for a a bit under £5 ... from eBay!

Loads of other stuff - a box full of brand new Dreamcast games and Star Trek game soundtrack CDs(!?!) from an Oxfam that I bought for £2 each sold all for an average of £15 each.

A 5 volume set on the History of Broadcasting in the UK bought from Oxfam for £40 and sold on Amazon for £160 (to a university library!).

Please let us know what Megadrive game is worth £3-400? My partner actually used to trade in old consoles and the rarest Megadrive games are about £80 - 90 nowadays. I think you are just making things up to gloat!! :T

I brought a green vase that had flowers on it in a charity shop for £15-00 once got it home and realised it was Wade.

It sold at an antiques fair for £655-00 2 years later I was so chuffed but that is the only once it has happened to me.

The thing I'm struck by, reading all these posts, is how ingenious people are and how much specialist knowledge we have between us that we can use to save or make money! I'm amazed by some of the figures people have quoted for money they've made on bargains they've bought.

I wouldn't necessarily know a rare book or vase but I can spot saleable vintage clothes at ten paces. I've often thought it would be a good idea to branch out and learn more about collectables to be able to spot more things when I'm at jumble or car boot sales. Although I guess, in a way, it is better to have your 'niche' so that you can focus on that, as you don't get much time to snaffle the best bargains at a jumble, you need to be so quick!

I picked up a load of brand new with tag clothes from next at the local car boot sale. Woman had a baby boy and obviously had too many presents. I bought them all for a fiver and took them back to the shop and got £50 worth of vouchers for my wee girl :)
TRYING hard to be a good money saver
